“Not even in London?”
“It’s all work lately. I tried so hard to get the promotion so I could afford my mortgage and now I hardly get to enjoy living there.”
“There’s more to life than fancy apartments and work, Cam.”
“We need to work to live, Gray.”
“There’s a difference between working to live and living to work, and you seem to have the two confused.” He pulls a key from his pocket and unlocks the tearoom door.
I shrug off his zip-up jacket and hand it back to him as I step inside. “Thank you.”
He takes it from me and rests an arm against the door frame, caging me in as he closes the door behind me. His eyes roam my face, and I chew on my lip. His gaze travels south to my cleavage, then back to land on my chewed lip.
“I best get to bed. Early start in the morning.”
Grayson growls at me. He growls. I think my knickers just disintegrated with the combustion in my core.
After staring into my eyes for a beat too long, his knuckles graze my flushed cheek. “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind.”
“You’re quoting Shakespeare?” I gulp.
“Yeah, but damn, I love the way you look, Cam.”
I suck in a breath.
His nose touches mine. “Do you know what you do to me?”
I gulp. “Anxiety? Lack of sleep? Cramp?” I slip under his arm, before he has the chance to kiss me or I do something I shouldn’t like ravish him right here in the tearoom. I’d never be able to look at a spout the same way again.
“Night, Gray.” I leave him to lock up as I run up the stairs, my body set alight with a burning desire for him, but no good will come of it. In a few weeks, I’m leaving. I don’t belong here. I wouldn’t survive the climate, let alone the heat with Gray.
GRAY
Iwipe a table next to a loved up couple, gazing at each other across the small vase of flowers. A pain stabs me in the chest. I want that for me and Cam, someone to enjoy a meal with. Someone to share a life and grow old with.
Behind the counter, Julian points to the couple. “Remember the two blokes on their honeymoon at Christmas?”
“Graham and Jay?”
“Yeah, that’s their niece. She’s a weather reporter, kind of a big deal in Texas, and so is he. I mean, look at those muscles.”
“All right, Romeo, I think you got a little drool there.”
“Anyway, they’re on their honeymoon. Thought you might want to give them the afternoon tea on the house.” He adds the last finishing touches to the three tier stand.
“Yeah, good idea.”
Cam opens the register and digs out change for a customer she’s serving. “We’re running a business, not a charity.” She closes the drawer with her hip.
I roll my eyes, then lift the three tiers from the counter and deliver it to the happy couple. “Hey guys, my colleague tells me you’re on your honeymoon.”
“Yeah, we tied the knot last Saturday and her uncles sent us here on a honeymoon,” the guy says, reaching out a hand. “I’m Liam, this is Eve.”
I shake his hand and nod to Eve, who gives me a smile. “How’re you liking Candy Cane Key?”
“Love it. I can see why it’s her uncle Jay’s favourite place in the world.”
Cam slides a tray of tea onto the table. “I’ve printed the bill off for you and tucked it under the cup.”
