She’ll catch me later?

I kicked myself. I shouldn’t have answered the call. It hadn’t even been a big emergency. By the time I had taken the horses home, handed them over to one of the groomsmen who looked after them in the mornings, and showered, the engineers had already worked out a solution.

I was annoyed with myself for letting Amy go. It had been nice to take a break, and it was easy to be around her. It felt natural.

Or had it been? In the past when I’d blown off women I’d dated, they would pitch a fit. I had just assumed that was how women who were interested in you behaved.

But Amy hadn’t. Instead, she had been cool and just shrugged like she couldn’t care less. Maybe she didn’t care.

Maybe she was just being friendly. Or maybe she just wanted to sleep with me and be done with it.

Wouldn’t that be the easiest thing, though, to just sleep with her then move on?

There was no denying the sexual tension between us. We clearly wanted each other. But I was starting to want her for more than just sex, though I did want to taste her pussy.

I wanted to spend more time with her. I wanted to go horseback riding and walk around Harrogate, listening to her commentary about the townspeople.

“You can’t start falling for her,” I chastised myself. “It’s too complicated, and your life is already messy enough.”

Then why did I want to plan a date with her?

“It’s just the natural progression of things,” I rationalized.

I wasn’t one to sleep with a woman then toss her aside. I should be a gentleman and at least take Amy out for dinner first.

That was what I would do. Then once she and I had had sex or had a few different types of sex, I would have my life back.

I shook my head.

Going on a horseback ride in the middle of the week was crazy when you thought about it.

It was all the wedding planning. Those meetings had ruined my schedule. I blamed Hunter. He barely worked, and only attended investment meetings when he felt like it. The rest of the time, I had no idea what he did.

Hunter:How was the rest of the wedding meeting?

Sebastian:Fine.

Hunter:Seems extremely extra for you to be out riding horses and having a meeting. That’s a new one.

Oh, for fuck’s sake.

Sebastian:How the hell did you find out? Do you have cameras everywhere? Meg always claimed that you all were trying to take over the town. I thought it was a bit histrionic, but now I’m not so sure.

Hunter:Relax! I was at Hazel’s for lunch with Meg, and Ida told me that Dottie was out at the convention center and saw you two, and she wanted to know if you were kidnapping Amy.

Hunter:They told Ernest, and he was a bit perturbed.

Sebastian:Fuck.

Hunter:You should probably go talk to him. Everyone likes him. You don’t want people to think you’re out to trash his granddaughter’s reputation.

Hunter:Things could get ugly.

Sebastian:Fucking small towns.

I didn’t need the whole town on my case. Now I really needed to take Amy out on a date. I was oddly not unhappy about the idea.

Sebastian:Do you want to get dinner tonight?
