The smile vanished from Ridge’s face.He took a step back, his eyes wide as he stared at Kael.Kael had a similar reaction, although from the looks of it, he wasn’t panicking quite as hard as Ridge was.
Tex had no idea what the fuck was going on, but he couldn’t afford for anyone to panic, especially not one of the people who was supposed to have his back.“Ridge?”he asked.
Ridge was silent for a moment before shaking his head.“I’m sorry.I thought I saw a spider.”
“A spider?”
Ridge nodded.“Yeah.It’s gone now, though.”
“You’re sure you’re okay?”
“I’m fine,” Ridge promised before turning to Tex, because he’d been staring at Kael the entire time, and Kael had been staring back.“So, you said that Gregory sent you some kind of information? What are we talking about? What are we going to do with that information?”
“I have an address and the name of a person we should find there. It’s clear that this person’s involved with the network, possibly started it.We need to go there and arrest them, basically.”
“You don’t have any kind of authority here,” Kael pointed out.
“By arrest, he means knocking them upside the head and dragging them out of town,” Ridge explained.“We’re not going to hurt them. Our job is just to get them out so that they can be interrogated. If they have nothing to do with the network or what’s happening, they’ll be released.”
“Whatishappening?”Kael asked.“Because I have no idea what’s going on.”
Apparently, Nymon hadn’t gotten around to telling him about the network of demons selling their magical abilities.Tex didn’t know if Nymon wanted Kael to know, and it wasn’t his place to tell him anything, anyway.
A knock on the door made all of them freeze. They looked at each other in turn, and Tex ended up looking at Nymon.“Who is that?”he asked.
“How am I supposed to know?I’m back here with you.”
“You should probably find out who it is.”
“No shit.”
Tex grinned. He really liked his mate.“Are you going to answer?”
“I don’t feel like I should. You guys are all here, and I’m not expecting anyone. No one visits me, so this is weird.”
“I’m sure your parents come around.Maybe it’s them.”
“When he says that no one visits him, he means it,” Kael said.“I’m the only one who does, and I’m already here.”
Whoever was at the door knocked again.Tex didn’t know what to do.This wasn’t his home, so the decision should come from Nymon. If he didn’t want to talk to whoever was at the door, maybe ignoring them would make them leave.
“Nymon?”a man called out.“Nymon Oakfly? The elders need to talk to you.We know you’re aware of the presence of a shifter in town.”
Nymon paled, and Tex reached for him.He had no idea how these people had found out about his presence here, but he wouldn’t let anyone take Nymon. They’d have to run over his dead body, and he wouldn’t go down easily. He knew that his friends would keep his mate safe, too, in case he couldn’t.
Kael opened his mouth, either to freak out or answer, but Nymon grabbed his wrist and shook his head.Kael snapped his mouth shut. They stared at each other for a moment, and Tex thought that would be it.The logical thing to do for the person outside the door was to leave when he didn’t get an answer.
They all quickly snuck inside the house in case the person at the front door tried walking around the house to find Nymon.Hopefully, the man would leave soon, and Tex and the others would be able to go and do their job.Tex wanted out of this town as soon as possible.
Instead, they heard someone attempt to open the front door.Kael’s eyes went wide, while Nymon swore and briefly screwed his eyes shut.Nymon had no idea what was going on, but something like a mini earthquake made the ground shake for just a few seconds. When Nymon opened his eyes, he looked both surprised and satisfied.
“He’s not getting in,” he murmured.
“What did you do?”Tex asked.
“I used plants to create a barrier between this guy and the house. No one can come in as long as I keep it up.”
This mission had started off fairly easily.Everything had gotten more complicated when Tex had met Nymon, but he couldn’t regret meeting his mate.He didn’t, even though right now, the chance that the mission would be a mess was high.
