“It’s my best friend,” Nymon murmured.“Unless you want me to explain who you are to him, you should probably leave.”

Tex nodded.“I think it’s too soon to tell anyone. We should talk first, and I need to call my supervisor.”

“Come back later, please.”

“I will,” Tex promised.

The only thing Nymon could do was watch him quickly undress and shift back.He managed to sneak out of the greenhouse and hide in the thick hydrangea bushes by the fence seconds before Kael stepped out of the house through the back door.

Nymon sighed. He loved his best friend, but right now, he wished he could tell Kael to go home.

Chapter Four

––––––––

“ITOLD HIM WHY I’Mhere,” Tex blurted out as soon as Gregory answered the phone.

There was a moment of silence before Gregory sighed.“Of course you did.We talked, what?A few hours ago?”

“I couldn’tnottell him.”

“Yes, you could have.It would’ve been easy. You could’ve kept your mouth shut.Even better, you could’ve stayed in your wolf form. That way, you wouldn’t have been able to say anything.”

Tex knew his superior was right. At the same time, how could Gregory expect him not to tell his mate the truth about his presence in Starhaven?Nymon deserved to know.More than that, Tex deserved to know if Nymon was someone he could trust.

He needed to be able to trust his mate.He needed to know if they had a future.

“He didn’t freak out or tell anyone if that’s what you’re thinking,” he told Gregory.“He understands why I’m here.”

“I’m sure he does.It doesn’t mean he’s more loyal to you than he is to his people.”

“I’m his mate.”

“He’s a demon,” Gregory said gently.“Demons don’t have mates, remember?”

“Well,thisdemon has a mate.”

“I understand that, I really do, and I’m not going to tell you to leave him behind or anything like that, but you need to be cautious. We’re not only talking about your personal life here, Tex.You were sent to Starhaven to do a job. That job didn’t include telling your mate why you’re there.”

Tex sighed. He knew that Gregory was right, as little as he wanted to admit it.“I’m aware.Look, I know you don’t trust him, but you don’t know him.”

“Neither do you.”

“I’m sure I can trust him.”

“Because he’s your mate.”

“And because of the things he said and the way he behaves. He hates that demons are hurting people. He wants it to stop.”

“That’s commendable. Is he going to help you?”

“He’s willing to.”

Gregory was silent for a moment.Tex wanted to ask what he was thinking, but he was kind of afraid to find out.He didn’t think Gregory would tell him to go home right away or that he needed to stop talking to Nymon, but there was always a chance that he might. The most important thing for both of them right now needed to be the job, and it wasn’t for Tex, not since he’d met Nymon. He wasn’t doing a good job, and it would be better for Gregory to send someone else.

“Would he actually be willing to work with us?”Gregory eventually asked.

“As a spy, you mean?”
