He tugged on his collar, feeling claustrophobic.
“I know you’re a genius when it comes to building things, and I’m tasking you with making the sets.” She winked as if he were the luckiest man alive.
He shook his head. “I have too much work to do.”
“I know you have some spare time in that workshop of yours.” She batted her eyelashes at him. “Besides, you have a whole year to work this out. Please? It would mean so much to the children.”
“The children?” he asked dubiously.
She nodded. “Imagine the memories they’ll cherish for years to come.”
He shook his head. The side door opened, and Jovie came through holding her little sister’s hand. Pax couldn’t help but watch the way she tucked a strand of hair back for the little girl. They called kids that were born that late a caboose and this one seemed to be just that, always one step behind Jovie.
“You know,” Heidi tapped her chin. “Jovie will be heavily involved in the planning.”
Pax’s gaze cut to her. Had he given too much away? Stared too long?
“She’ll be singing, of course. But I’ll need her artistic skills to say . . . paint the sets.” She looked away as if she weren’t trying to manipulate him into spending countless hours on a project he didn’t want. Still, if he could work with Jovie then he’d do it. She hadn’t spoken to him since that awful day under the bleachers.
“Okay,” he croaked.
Heidi released him so she could clap her hands. “Yay! I’ll be in touch. Ta ta.”
She bustled off to corner someone else, and Pax darted for the parking lot. He didn’t breathe until he was in the truck and then he fogged up the windows as he worked to calm himself down. This was it. He finally had an in with Jovie and he wasn’t going to let it go to waste.
No sir.
He was going to win her over once and for all.
This was going to be the best Christmas pageant ever.

BONUS STORY
Colter couldn’t sleep.
It was Christmas Eve, and if he didn’t fall asleep, then Santa wouldn’t come. He knew when you were sleeping!
He squeezed his eyes shut and counted to ten.
Jingle.
His eyes popped open. What was that?! Tipping his head, he strained to listen.
Jingle.
There it was again!
He pushed back his covers and then froze. Should he look? His bedroom door was right off the living room and the Christmas tree was one peek around the corner.
He put his feet on the cold floor. His toes curled up, but he was too excited by the rustling noises in the living room to jump back into bed.
