“I guarantee she didn’t teach me about this.” He traced his finger across her cheek, leaving behind a trail of heat.
“Yeah. Okay.” She covered her face and rubbed her eyes. “If we’re not freaking out, what are we doing?”
He loosened his hold and grabbed her hands. “We’re trying this out.”
“This?”
“Kissing. We’re kissing friends.”
“Is that a thing?”
“It can be our thing. Look, we can make this a huge, awkward deal, or we can go with it and see where we end up.”
“What if we end up hating each other?”
“That’s not going to happen. Because we won’t let it happen.”
She pulled her hand from his and cupped his cheek, enjoying his scruff against her palm. “So I can do that and it’s fine.”
He leaned into her touch. “Totally fine.”
She stepped closer, bringing their bodies flush. “And this?”
He cleared his throat. “Fine. All fine.”
She grinned. “Okay, then.”
He grinned and plopped a kiss on her lips.
“But we can’t let the kids see us. I don’t want them getting the wrong idea or spreading rumors at school or telling your family.” That would be the worst-case scenario. How would she ever explain herself to her mother-in-law? There were no words that would make up for that kind of betrayal.
His smile faltered, but he recovered quickly. “Yeah—undercover kissing is the best kind anyway.”
She laughed. “You’re a regular James Bond. The spy who kissed me.”
He bobbed his head. “I like the sound of that.”
She shoved his arm as she stepped away. “All right, Mr. Bond. Let’s get this tent shut up for the night so I can get to bed. I’ve got a busy day tomorrow.”
“Yes, ma’am.” He grabbed her around the waist and nuzzled his nose into her neck. “Have I ever told you you’re cute when you’re bossy?”
Breathless with giggles, she shoved against his hold. “I must be downright irresistible ninety percent of the time, then.”
“You have no idea.” He let her go and flipped around to double-check that the tent sides were Velcroed tight.
Wynn put her hand over her heart, trying to calm it down. Judd was just being Judd. He was always funny. Always a tease. Her reaction was a result of having been kissed for the first time in years. That was all there was to it. No need to read anything more in there than what was plain as day.
She rubbed her lips, enjoying the slightly swollen feel of them. Kissing was a good thing. A stress reliever. She glanced over her shoulder. She could do with a little more stress relief in her life.
Chapter 11
Judd
Judd whistled as he walked down Main Street. The Johannsen job was well begun and therefore half done, as his mom would say. He liked the way the interior had turned out. The owner left the beams exposed in the ceiling. Because of the steep-pitched Swiss roof, it would be a bugger to heat in the winter, but the aesthetic was worth it. He’d used piping to hide the wires. The owner wasn’t happy about the increase in price, and he had to talk to him about it today—get a check.
This was the part of being the business owner he didn’t enjoy. Asking people for money wasn’t his forte, but not even that could dampen his mood.
He’d kissed Wynn. Kissed her good. And it was amazing. So amazing. Better than anything he’d dreamed. Not just in a physical sense—because that was top-notch—but also in a cosmic connection way. He’d never been so in sync with a woman, so aware of her needs and filled with a desire to fulfill them. Reading her body language came easily, like he’d been doing it his whole life.
