I blink.

“That sounds good.”

“But no one programmed it.”

The water remains calm.

The birds keep arguing in the trees.

Everything about the morning feels perfectly normal.

Except for one thing.

The system in Los Angeles—

Just improved itself.

On its own.

Wren studies the screen again.

Then looks up at me.

“Well.”

“That’s new.”

I fold my arms.

“Is it a problem?”

She thinks for a moment.

Then shakes her head.

“Not yet.”

She pockets the phone again.

“Today is still a normal day.”
