Looking at the man, Star remembered things he had learned in school about Egyptian mythology. The god of mummification was Anubis, who had the form of a jackal and lived in the underworld. Since coming to this world, Star understood that people believed the gods were real. Even Chase said the gods granted Star’s parents their requests. Staring at Anubis, Star had to ask the burning question that'd been plaguing him since they met.

“Are your parents worshipers of Anubis, which is why they gave you that name?”

Anubis blinked a few times before he burst out laughing as he shifted back into his human face.

“What? Why are you laughing at me?” Star pouted, not understanding what he said that was funny.

“You're adorable.” Anubis pulled him into his arms and kissed him on the forehead. “Since you're a cat, do you worship the goddess Bastet?”

“What does that have to do with what I asked you?”

“You'll figure it out later.” Anubis smiled. “Speaking of which, I can find out who turned you into a cat.”

Star looked up at him. “Really?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“That's a secret,” he said, tapping Star on the nose.

“I thought you said we can't keep secrets from each other.”

“We can't, but I can't reveal this without permission.”

“Okay, fine.” Star harrumphed, pretending to be angry. He understood that there were things Anubis couldn't tell him yet. After all, he was holding on to his own secrets.

Anubis pecked him on his lips. “Don't be angry, my little one. There are some things I can't explain yet, but when I do, you will understand.”

“Then I will wait until you're ready to tell me.” He cupped Anubis's cheeks. “Last night, I felt something powerful happen between us. My body, my mind…” He paused and looked out the window. When he drank Anubis’s blood, Star could have sworn he felt a powerful magnet pulling his heart closer to Anubis, as if his life force connected them. “I don't know if I'm explaining it correctly.” He turned his gaze back to Anubis. “All I know is that my world will crumble if we…”

Anubis sighed. “Nothing will happen to us, Star. I know it's sudden, but we are connected by magic and blood. All this time, I thought I was going crazy with how attracted I was to you and why I couldn’t stop thinking about you. I don’t need to search any longer because you are my forever one. But I couldn't hold back from claiming you last night, either. Whenever you're near me, I seem to lose control, Star. ”

“I'm your forever one?” Star whispered as a new hope sprouted in his thoughts and heart. “You mean it?”

“Yes.” Anubis smiled. “Just as you took me as your mate, I took you as mine. We're it for each other. That’s why I told Thor not to bother with the contract, but if you still need it, we’ll have one drawn up.”

Mate, mate, where have I heard that word before?Star allowed the word to simmer as he tried to remember the significance of the word mate, completely missing the last part of Anubis’s words.

“All right.” Anubis kissed Star again. “Get dressed. While you were sleeping, I made plans for us today.”

Star nodded subconsciously, and just as Anubis walked out of the room, it came to him.

Holy shit, I got married last night during sex! Is that how it all works? He slapped his forehead.Chase is right; I need to do my research.

Chapter Twenty-One

STAR

Before Anubis left the bedroom, Star quickly grabbed his phone off the nightstand, brought up the VWQuest search engine, and put in mates and mating. He was floored by all the information that popped up. Star picked one topic that summarized everything he needed. The points that caught his eye were that mates could not cheat on each other and were very possessive.

Although he started out on mating, then alpha-omega relationships, he ended up on knotting. Star remembered the hard thing that had locked Anbis's cock inside and sent pleasurable vibrations through him when it rubbed against his prostate. It was also how they fell asleep the night before, with Anubis spooning him from behind with his cock still locked inside of him. He read about ABS or alpha-beta syndrome, which was not as interesting as the rabbit hole he dug into as male pregnancies, where Anubis found him still sitting on the bed in the same position.

“Why aren't you dressed?”

“Ah, Anubis!” Star screamed, jumping in fright as he fumbled with his phone, trying to turn it off and hide it, hoping Anubis didn’t see what he was looking at since he was standing so close to him. “What are you doing here?”

Anubis quirked a brow, staring down at Star. “What are you doing?”
