“My Lord...”

“Stop with the fucking my lord shit. Chase, we're practically family. Star wasn't here when I woke up, and I wanted to know if you've seen him.”

“Not since I left the restaurant yesterday. Did you try calling him?”

“His phone is here,” Anubis said, holding up the thing.

“Have you spoken to Tanner? Maybe he went to see him.”

“No, you're the first person I called.”

“I'll call Tanner,” Chase said. “Not to doubt you, but… are you sure he didn't just go for a walk? You know how much he enjoys going by the bridge.”

“I know something is wrong. I can feel it,” Anubis said.

“Okay, let me call Tanner. You check the bridge.”

“Good idea.” Anubis was about to leave when he realized he wasn't dressed properly and went to take care of his needs before Chase had even made the call.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

STAR

Anubis appeared on the bridge, running from one end to the other, calling out Chase's name, feeling resigned when the man did not respond. Pulling out his phone, he dialed Vivienne, who seemed to answer without the phone ringing.

“Please tell me you have Star locked in your basement somewhere.”

“I was going to ask you the same question,” Anubis said.

“Fuck, fuck, fuck, this is bad.”

“He's missing, so there is nothing worse,” Anubis snapped.

“How about murder,” Vivienne said.

“Star isn't dead,” Anubis yelled.

“No, but the police think he killed someone. I've been suppressing the news.”

Anubis went to question Vivienne, but she kept talking without taking a breath.

“The police were just here questioning me about Star. I didn't give them your address. I told them he was out of town on a business trip. But Anubis, this is fucking bad. I don't think they believed me. You know Alistair, the new police chief, hired empaths on the force, and the cop who was just here… Anubis, they said he killed Thornton Miller.”

Anubis shook his head, knowing that was impossible. The last he knew of Miller, he was being hauled off to jail. So someone or something else was at work. “Where are you?”

“I'm at my office,” she responded.

“Wait there. I need to do something, but I'll be there in a minute.”

“Anubis, Star is innocent. Right? I mean...I don't think he'd kill anyone. I think sometimes he's afraid of his own shadow, but I can't reach him, and I'm worried about him.”

“Are you really asking me that?” Anubis said. “Just be at your office when I get there.” Anubis hung up and teleported away, appearing in front of Azazel's house. The door opened when he appeared, and Azazel stood in front of him.

“You're making it a habit of coming to my house without calling first. But by the look on your face, something's up.”

“I need your help. Well, not yours, per se, but Uriel's.”

Azazel went to speak, but the door opened further, and Uriel appeared beside his mate. “Anubis, what can I help you with?”
