“Years ago, it’s a long story. Let’s not go into it right now,” Uriel told him. “So, what do you want to do? Eventually, your uncle is going to come after you, and you can’t keep things from Khray.”
Blue sighed. “I know. I just need a couple more months to heal.”
“You’re not thinking about running from your uncle, are you?”
“No, if I was running from him, I wouldn’t have entered the entertainment industry. I just thought I had more time to deal with him. I might be human, but I’m a fast healer. I didn’t expect him to try to kill me so quickly.”
Uriel hummed. “If he’s making a move on you now, what is it you know that he’s afraid would get out?”
“Other than his role in killing my parents, the other big one is that he’s not related to me by blood. The older generation, who would have remembered that my grandparents adopted Benito, are no longer living, and those who are, he’s controlling them with whatever seedy information he has on them. In our family, only blood relatives can inherit the family business. My father was the last CEO, and the company would have been passed down to my older brother. But since he’s dead, I’m next in line. But I don’t want it. I haven’t been a part of that family since I was five.”
“Have you told him that?”
“Of course I did, but he thinks I’m lying. He can’t get it through his thick skull that I love my life and what me and Khray have built together. Our dream is to make all the money we can and then walk away from the entertainment industry and have a family. I know we’ll have to adopt since he’s not an alpha, but I don’t care. I know what it’s like to grow up in the system. Taking over an enterprise and having people who don’t even care if I live or die depending on me for their livelihood is not the life I want.”
“Don’t you hate him for killing your family?”
“I did for a long time, but I realized I can’t hold on to my hate forever or it will eat away at me.” He smiled. “You might not believe me, but you had a lot to do with me letting go.”
“How? I didn’t even remember you.”
“You saved me. I could have died along with my parents and brother, but you did the most basic thing by giving me a chance to live. It would be a waste to seek revenge.”
Uriel could understand Blue’s situation and decided to help him. “All right, leave Benito to me and my friends. You focus on getting better.”
“Thank you.” Blue sighed in relief.
“But you’re going to have to keep playing the game for a bit longer.”
Blue nodded. “Don’t worry, I will.”
“Good. Eat this, Synder prepared it for you.” Uriel picked up the fruit bowl and set it on the bed tray so that Blue could feed himself with his good hand. A few seconds later, Uriel’s cellphone rang, and he saw Khray requesting a video chat.
“I’m going to take this outside.”
“Okay.”
Uriel got up and went to the extra room, shifting into his Blue persona before answering the phone. “Khray, what’s up?”
“Where did you go?” Khray demanded. “Dagon is not happy with you right now.”
“I told you to make up an excuse for me. A friend needed my help,” was all Uriel had to say, and he could tell by the look on the man’s face he understood.
“Oh, is it him? Is everything okay?”
“Yeah. I’ll head back there soon. Let me finish up here.”
“Um… all right,” Khray whispered. Uriel was about to hang up, but the other man stopped him. “Wait, we might be finished up here before you get back. Just head home since you're free for the rest of the week. Oh, by the way, I got a call from Mister King's assistant. The dinner we were supposed to have was rescheduled for this Friday at ten in the morning in his office.”
Uriel hummed in understanding, then hung up before Khray could say anything else. It seemed from their phone call that the other man held a lot of respect for Dagon. Uriel couldn't care less that Dagon was unhappy, but for Blue’s sake, he’d play along. He entered the bedroom and looked away from his phone when he heard Blue gasp.
“Shit, that’s freaky as hell.”
“Sorry, I forgot to change back. If it makes you uncomfortable…”
“No, don’t, it’s fine.” Blue smiled.
“That was Khray. I kind of disappeared just as we were going to a meeting with Jason Dagon and the rest of your team.”
