“I’m going to enjoy working with you.”
“Who said I was going to take the job?” Alistaire tilted his head to the side. “Where’s the job anyway?”
“Valleywood.”
Alistaire clicked his tongue. “Valleywood already has a mayor and a police commissioner.”
Boroson shrugged his shoulders. “That will change soon. You know how things are, one minute they’re alive and the next minute they’re dead.”
“Are you confessing to premeditated murder?”
Boroson barked out a laugh smacking his thigh as if Alistaire had said something hysterical.
“You really are perfect. Here I am saying I might kill someone, and you don’t even bat an eye.” Boroson stopped laughing and stared intently at Alistaire. “Unfortunately, I’m not allowed to kill anyone.”
“So you’ve killed before?” Alistaire asked.
“So have you,” Boroson smiled. “Let’s not talk about past actions. I came here to offer you a job. I believe you and I will have a wonderful working relationship.”
Alistaire wasn’t sure what to make of the man standing in front of him. He couldn’t tell if the man was joking or being serious. Alistaire would admit he didn’t know much about the Boroson family. The name had been around for as long as he’d been alive or probably longer. He only hoped Rosemary knew what she was doing marrying into their family.
“What are you bringing to the table?”
Boroson smiled. “So you are interested?”
“Just talk and stop playing around.”
“You’re no fun,” Boroson sighed. “You’ll be in charge of the entire police department. You won’t have to report to me unless you feel the need. You’ll have unlimited budget and resources to do with as you wish.” He paused, sitting on the couch. “What I’m looking for is an autonomous government rather than the status quo where I’m breathing down your neck. You won’t need to answer to me for your actions.”
Alistaire stared at the man in front of him, wondering why the job seemed too good to be true. A cushy job where he didn’t have anyone to answer to, who wouldn’t want that?
“What’s the catch?” Alistaire asked. “Don’t get me wrong. I’d love to run an entire police department my way and change a few things without having to answer to anyone, especially the mayor. I’ve been a cop for a long time and learned a few things, and when I hear a deal that sounds so sweet I’m getting a toothache, I can’t help but think what do you really want?”
Boroson smiled. “You are as sexy as you are smart, Alistaire McBain.”
Alistaire was about to tell Boroson to fuck off when someone else spoke.
“Who the hell are you?”
Both Boroson and Alistaire looked away from each other to see Crevan standing at the door, glaring daggers at them.
How cute, he’s jealous.
Boroson stood and grabbed his coat and walked over to Crevan, stopping in front of him. He reached out to touch him, but Boroson’s hand stopped in midair. After a few seconds, he chuckled, shaking his head.
“What an interesting day,” Boroson said, then looked at Alistaire. He took out a business card and threw it at Alistaire as if he was throwing a dagger. Alistaire caught it between his fingers and glanced at it, seeing the man's name and number. “Think about my offer, McBain. I’ll wait until you’ve tied up your business here.” Boroson walked out of the room, leaving him with an upset lover.
Alistaire watched Crevan pick Genesis up and gently lay the sleeping baby down in the crib, covering her up. He stared down at her with sweet, caring eyes for a few seconds. He took off his coat, dropping it on the couch before turning to face Alistaire.
“Who was that? And what offer is he talking about?” He snapped. “And why did he call you McBain?”
“Because McBain is my birth surname. But I use Vale since everyone knows I’m related to the Vale family. Anyway, forget about him and come here. I’ve missed you.” Alistaire stretched his hand out, waiting for Crevan to take it but was disappointed when he didn’t.
“Not until you tell me who that was.”
Alistaire sighed, dropping his hand. “That was Loki Boroson. Odin’s son. He was offering me a job in Valleywood.”
“What kind of job?”
