“I’m not here for that,” Boroson said, cutting him off. He looked at the hospital door then back to Alistaire. “How is he?”
Alistaire furrowed his brows, looking at the other man. “How did you know he was in the hospital?”
Boroson sighed before closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. Alistaire didn’t know what the hell was going on with the man in front of him, but he didn’t have time for the man’s foolishness. Alistaire turned away from Boroson.
“You don’t need to worry, Alistaire. He’s stronger than he looks. His fate has been rewritten.” Boroson scoffed and shook his head. “Well played, daughter of mine.”
“You don’t have to tell me how strong he is, and his fate is not your concern,” Alistaire said over his shoulder.
“I’m glad you understand. I’ll await you both in Valleywood. I’m sure he’ll want to speak to me once he wakes up, because one day he will take my place. My father hasn’t won yet.”
Alistaire turned and was about to ask the man what the hell he meant, but there wasn’t anyone there. He looked down the hall and didn’t see Loki anywhere.
Damnit, this day cannot get any weirder.
Shaking his head, he walked back into his mate’s room and nodded to Corbin, who was sitting on the couch. It had only been a few hours since Fox had been admitted into the hospital, and the family had been taking turns watching him. Alistaire had sent everyone else home and told them he’d contact them if Fox woke up. According to the doctor, he wasn’t sure when Fox would wake up, but Alistaire wanted to be there. He’d realized since their fight, he’d started calling him Fox rather than Crevan. He’d been a fool to think it would make him feel as if he’d betrayed his first mate when in reality, nothing happened. His heart was more focused on the man in front of him than in the past.
“How is he?”
“He’s fine. The nurse was in to check on him a few minutes ago.”
Since Fox had helped Corbin out of a bind, their friendship had gotten better. Alistaire wouldn’t go as far as call them brothers, but they no longer threw daggers at each other. Alistaire brushed a stray hair from Fox’s face, his brows knitted together when he noticed the bruise he’d gotten from the accident on his forehead was gone.
That’s fucking strange.
Alistaire noticed the bruise wasn’t the only thing that had changed. It might have been his imagination, or he was so tired since he hadn’t slept in a few hours, but it seemed as if there were various gold threads wrapped around Fox’s chest. Alistaire brushed a hand across the threads and gasped when they wound their way around his hand and up his arm before stopping at his chest.
Alistaire waited for a sharp pain to attack him, but nothing happened except for the thread kept wounding its way around his chest before disappearing inside of him. He looked at Corbin to see if the other man noticed what was going on, but Corbin was flipping through a magazine, not paying him and Fox any attention. Alistaire turned his attention back to Fox, the glow had gone away, but he could still see the thread connecting them.
He is magical, and my true mate.
Alistaire didn’t care if Fox had magic or not. He simply wanted his mate to open his dual blue and green eyes.Wake up for me, baby.Reaching, he grabbed Fox’s hand and brought it to his lips.Don’t forget your promise to build a future with me. I can’t do that if you don’t wake up.
He’d called home and video chatted with Ava. Alistaire hadn’t kept anything from her and told her what happened. Alistaire tried to assure her everything would be fine, but he knew she’d worry no matter what he said. Clasping their fingers together, Alistaire furrowed his brows when he felt a piece of paper in between Fox’s fingers. Gently putting Fox’s hand down, he took out the paper and opened it.
It seems the gods have blessed me with a new love. I can see why you choose him, and now I want to take him for myself. Meet me in the forest before midnight in the spot where we met a few weeks ago. The last man standing gets to be with him.
Alistaire growled, crushing the paper. How the fuck did Euan Gillies get into Fox’s room without me noticing? Then a thought hit him. Earlier, Corbin had said a nurse had checked on Fox. Turning, he looked at Corbin.
“The nurse—you said the nurse came in and checked on Fox. What did they look like?”
“Um…it was a guy. He was tall with jet black hair. His name tag said James.” He paused for a few seconds. “You know what? He kind of looked like the guy who helped Fox and me out the day I got beat up. Fox also called him Mister James. I was kind of out of it, so I didn’t get a good look at the guy. Wait, did he do something to Fox?”
Alistaire stood then rushed out of the room, not answering Corbin. He went up to the nurse’s station and spoke to the nurse sitting at the desk—her name tag said Chen. “Do you have a nurse working tonight named James?”
“Last or first name?” Chen asked.
“Either?” Alistaire answered.
“We have a James Marcus working at this station, but he’s on maternity leave,” Chen told him.
Fuck!Alistaire mentally cursed, knowing the man he was looking for was long gone.
“Thank you.” Alistaire walked back to Fox’s room and over to the man lying on the bed. He leaned down and kissed Fox on the lips. “I’ll be back, baby. Don’t worry. I won’t let him have you. We made a vow to be together, and I’m going to make sure it happens.” With one last kiss, he stood and turned to Corbin. “I need to go out for a bit. Don’t let anyone but my family or yours enter this room.”
“Wait, where are you going?”
Alistaire turned the doorknob. “To finish something I should have years ago.” He walked with determination in his steps.
