Chapter Twelve

"Will you sit down," Creed told him.

"I can't," Winter told him as he walked back over to the crib where Connor was and caressed his flushed, chubby cheeks. He was grateful that at the moment he wasn’t fussing. "I thought this was an emergency room, we’ve been here for more than an hour. Where the hell is the doctor?”

"I had an emergency appendectomy. I thought the nurse would have told you."

Winter turned when he heard the doctor’s voice. "I'm sorry for assuming. I'm just worried."

"It's understandable, it’s why you’re here after all,” the doctor said walking into the cubical. "I'm Doctor Sierra, and you are Connor Makami's parents."

"Yes," Creed answered before he could correct him.

"And what's the problem?" he asked washing his hands. "I know you explained it all when you came in, but I'd like to hear it again in case you missed something the first time."

Winter took a deep breath before he spoke. "He's been cranky all day and refusing to eat. At first, I thought something was wrong with his formula, but I checked the expiration date and it was fine."

"Is he sleeping through the night, yet?” Doctor Sierra asked as he started checking Connor over.

"No, he still wakes up during the night," Winter answered.“But not as often as when I brought him home.”

"I think he's getting a cold," Creed added.

Winter scoffed.

"I take it you disagree?" The doctor askednot looking up at him.

"I do, he hasn't eaten all day. Each time he starts to eat, he starts crying. He threw up, and I thought maybe he caught what I have. I've been under the weather and can hardly keep anything down lately."

"Well he does have a slight cold, and that could be because he's teething." The doctor spoke as he looked in Connor's mouth and then his ear. "Connor is such a good baby. Most kids would be crying with frustration by now." He looked at Winter and Creed as he took off his gloves. "You don't need to worry, Connor has an ear infection. I'll send you guys home with some meds for him, and he should be fine in a couple of days."

"An ear infection, how?" Winter asked, trying to think if he'd done something wrong.

"It's quite common with babies, as it is with adults."

"And what about him throwing up?" Creed asked.

"Dad or the baby?" The doctor smiled at his own joke.

"Both," Creed answered.

"Well, with Connor it could be because he was hungry, and he got a bit dehydrated. I'll also send you guys home with some electrolytes. As a matter of fact, let's get him started now before I check him out of the hospital. As for dad, I have my suspicions, but I want to run a couple of tests first."

"Wait, we didn't come in here for me," Winter interjected.

"And now that we know that Connor will be fine, we need to see what's wrong with you," Creed told him.

Winter looked at the doctor and then at Creed, he really hated doctors. "Fine, but let it be known I don't like doctors."

"Noted," Doctor Sierra said then chuckled. "Now sit on the exam bed. I'm sure your mate will watch your son while I check you over. And while you're making yourself comfortable, I need to go and speak with the nurse about getting your son hydrated."

Winter went to tell the doctor that Connor wasn't his son, but the words wouldn't come out. Creed must have noticed something was wrong and picked up Connor. "Go sit on the bed."

Winter was hesitant to do it, and he didn't know why it could be that deep down he had a feeling he knew what was wrong with him. He looked up at Creed and it was only the worry in his mate’s eyes that made him give in. He nodded and then went to sit on the exam table and waited for Doctor Sierra return.

"I want us to adopt Connor officially," Creed said, surprising him.

"What?"
