“I’m sorry, dear, I was reading your aura.”

“My aura?”

“Yes, I thought being a witch yourself you’d realize what I was doing.”

Sirius gasped. “What?”

“Wait, you didn’t know you were a witch?”

“Of course, I know I’m a witch but other than my mother, I’ve never met another witch. Or any other supernatural to be honest.”

“Actually, you’ve met two. Tessa’s a witch as well and my life mate.” A bright smile appeared on her lips, and Sirius could tell she was in love. “But then living in Vale Valley, you’ll meet all kinds of supernaturals. Our new mayor was just turned into a werewolf and Rosemary who you just met is the one who turned him.”

“So, it’s true what they say about Vale Valley, that only supernaturals live in the town?”

“I wouldn’t go that far. There are human residents as well. But they keep our secrets.” She tilted her head and looked at him speculatively. “Who told you about that?”

“Told me what?”

“That only supernaturals live here?”

“My mother.”

“I wonder where she got that information from if she’s never lived here before,” Calista mumbled, and he saw the worried expression on her face.

“I wish I could tell you, I never once thought to ask her.”

“Do you mind asking her now? You see we try to keep the activities in this town a secret from those who are not knowledgeable of our world or the town. If humans who are not a part of our town were to find out about supernaturals, who knows what could happen to the safety net we’ve built.”

“I can understand your worry. But my mother died a few years ago in an accident,” he told her. The truth was Brigid killed herself, but Sirius couldn’t say the words out loud and always told people that it was an accident.

“I’m sorry for your loss.”

The sadness in her eyes told him it wasn’t just lips service, but that she meant it with sincerity.

“Thank you,” he told her. Sirius leaned forward, resting his elbows on his thighs. “You said you were reading my aura, does that mean you’re a cosmic witch?” Calista nodded. “What did you see?”

Calista pushed back from her desk and stood then walked over to him. She sat in the empty chair next to his. Sirius turned in his chair looking at her. She took his hands into hers and then gave him a slight smile that didn’t reach her eyes.

“You have been through a lot in the past, haven’t you?”

“It depends on what you mean by a lot,” he answered truthfully.

“You’re all over the place right now. At times you’ve had to be the leader when you didn’t want to and when you needed to be comforted there was no one around to hold you close. You’ve been lost for so long you’re not sure if you should trust the rash decisions you made.”

Sirius sat there for a few seconds going through emotions of shock and complete awe. “You got that just from reading my aura?”

Calista giggled. “That and I’m also an empath.”

“You could have told me that part from the beginning.”

“I can’t reveal all of my abilities to you on the first meeting.” They both smiled, and Sirius couldn’t believe how at ease he felt being in her presence. “I can also tell you are a strong witch but haven’t really practiced any spell casting in a very long time.”

“Not since I was a kid, I’m terribly out of practice.”

“I thought so.” She released his hands and stood. “Which is why before you start working with our patients, I want you to reconnect with the part of you that’s been missing for so long.” Calista picked up a notepad and wrote on it before handing it to him. “I want you to meet with Nicholas, he’s the second in command of our coven and will help you with whatever you need.”

Sirius took the paper and read the name and address quickly,Nicholas DiMarco. He felt weird that his boss was being so nice to him. She was treating him like family rather than the standard employee.
