Jordan looked away, the man was giving him a silent ultimatum. If only he wasn’t in desperate need of a job, he would have walked out the door already.
“However...however,” Duncan continued with a sigh, “in just a couple short minutes I have never seen my niece and nephew open up to anyone, definitely not any of the other nannies I hired to look after them.”
He extended his hand to one of the empty chairs in front of his desk, then got up and closed the door. He then sat in the chair beside Jordan facing him.
“What I am about to tell you is not known by anyone in the press. Six months ago, my sister and her husband died, leaving the twins in my care. Only trusted members of my company know that I had a sister. My sister and brother-in-law were very protective of their kids. Now I have the twins, and to be honest, I know how to run a company, but taking care of children is something completely new to me. I was unprepared for the responsibility. I want to raise them the right way, whatever that means. But I know for sure I don’t want to be one of those parents who simply throws gifts at them and bury myself in work which I am prone to do. And I need some extra help with that. You seem to pull them out of their shell, not many people have been able to do that.”
Jordan stared at his boss for a few minutes.Damn, why did he have to be so good-looking and straight? Fate really hates me, I’m sure of it.Who would have thought I would be attracted to a good guy?
“If I take the job,” he began. “And that is a big if. I have a few stipulations.”
Duncan leaned back in his chair. “And they are?”
“Unless you have an early meeting, you will have breakfast with the twins. Also, I need a list of their likes and dislikes, allergies, and I want one day off during the week added to my weekends off,” he rattled off. “And another thing I don’t clean nor do I do windows. Also, no cursing around the kids. That will go for me as well. It’s not good for them to learn such things from the person they admire the most.”
Duncan laughed, “Damn, maybe I should have you as my negotiator rather than the kid’s caretaker or nanny, whichever you prefer.”
“You have time to change your mind.”
Duncan shook his head. “No, I’m confident you will work out perfectly here. The kids seem to like you better than all the other nannies I’ve hired so far.” He walked over to his desk and pulled his jacket off the back of his chair. “As for cleaning, the twins are responsible for cleaning their room and playroom. I have someone come in and clean twice a week.” He looked down at his watch. “Shit, I’m already late for a meeting. But while you were with the kids, I made a list of their schedule for the day. The car I usually cart the kids around in is in the garage, the keys are hanging in the kitchen.”
He handed a sheet of paper to Jordan, who took it and was reading it. He frowned when he saw a series of numbers at the bottom of the paper. He looked up to ask his boss what that meant, but he was already heading for the front door. Jordan practically ran out of the office and caught up to his boss, who was just about to open the door.
“Sir.”
“Jordan, you are now working for me, so please, call me Duncan. What can I do for you? I really have to go.”
“Okay, Duncan, I’m a bit confused about something. What’s this number at the bottom of the page mean?”
“That’s your pay.”
With all the zeros at the end of the number, Jordan was even more confused. “That’s a bit much for one month, don’t you think?” He didn’t realize he’d said that out loud.
“That’s not your monthly pay. That is for one week,” his new boss corrected.
Holy hell, is he crazy! He widened his eyes in shock. What the fuck?“Sir, I mean, Duncan, this is really too much.”Shut the hell up before he changes his mind, dummy,Jordan chastised himself.
Duncan did not get a chance to argue, the kids came down the stairs at that moment.
“Uncle Duncan, are you leaving now?” Benjamin asked.
“I sure am, now come and give me a hug,” he instructed. “You guys be good for Jordan, he’s your new nanny.”
“Is that true, Jordan?” asked Maddison, excitement shown on her tiny face.
“Yes,” he said, bending down to their level. “I will be taking care of you guys while your uncle is at work.”
A joyous shout of “yay”was his answer.
“Now, I really need to go,” Duncan said hugging the twins.
“No, Uncle Duncan, Jordan is not our nanny, he is our manny because he is a man,” Benjamin corrected.
“Then, in that case, be good for your manny,” Duncan instructed and was out the door before Jordan could say anything.
Realizing it was settled, Jordan looked at the twins. “So what do you want to do today?”
