I bite the inside of my mouth, heat rising into my cheeks. He cups my face and kisses me gently. “How did I get so lucky?”
Chapter 30
Quinn
“Well, everyone, that’s all for today. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving,” Dwight says with a smile as everyone stands up to leave the room.
“Happy Thanksgiving, Quinn. Remember, your invite to spend it with me is still open,” Amy offers.
A couple of days ago, she asked if I wanted to spend Thanksgiving with her parents, but I politely declined. I hate Thanksgiving. I haven’t always, it’s only since my parents died that I do. Thanksgiving was our thing, in our house it was almost bigger than Christmas, and now that they’re gone, I can’t bring myself to celebrate it.
“Thanks Ames, I appreciate it. Happy Thanksgiving.”
She pulls me in a hug, and we stand there for a few moments while the last few students filter out of the room.
“You too.”
“I need to speak to Professor Evans, my laptop’s playing up and his assignment might have to be a little late,” I lie. I hate lying to her, but it’s the way it has to be, for now at least.
“Okay, well I'll see you.” She offers me a wave and disappears out the door.
When we’re finally alone, Dwight pulls me in for a mind-bending kiss. My arms go around his neck and he lifts me by the waist and spins us around.
“Hey.”
“Hey yourself,” he says, pecking another kiss to my lips before returning me to my feet. “So what are your plans for Thanksgiving?”
“I don’t do Thanksgiving anymore.”
“How come?”
“It was special to us... me and my parents. Now they’re gone, it’s not the same.”
“So you’re gonna stay at home, alone?”
“I don’t mind being alone, never have.”
“Then I'm staying with you.”
“No, Dwight. Your family just got you back, you are not choosing me over them. You’re gonna go and spend it with your family. I’ll be fine, I promise.”
“I hate the thought of you being on your own.”
“Dwight, I amfine. I want you to spend it with them. Promise me you won’t spend another second worrying about me. Enjoy your first Thanksgiving with your family. For me.”
He sighs deeply, reaching up to brush a stray hair behind my ear. “I still hate it… but I promise.”
Chapter 31
Dwight
On my way over to my parents’ house, I keep thinking about Quinn, about how she insists I spent Thanksgiving with my family while she sits in her apartment, all alone. I get that this time of year is hard for her, not being able to celebrate it as it drudges up too many painful memories, but I can’t let her be on her own. She needs people around her, and despite the half-hearted promise I made her, and no matter how much she resists, I’m no taking no for an answer.
The second her door swings open, my heart skips a beat. She’s dressed in a pair of grey sweatpants that hang low on her hips, and a white tank top that hugs tightly at the curves of her body, her nipples peeking through the thin fabric of her top and my mouth waters at the sight. She’s makeup free and her hair is tied up into a messy bun at the top of her head, strands hanging down, framing her face perfectly.
She’s absolutely beautiful.
Her eyes widen when she sees me and rests her hands on her hips, her eyebrows raised.
