“Why do you think we’re here, Cooper? Care to hazard a guess?” The man steps further into the room. “I’m here to collect what’s owed to me. Hand it over and I will be out of your hair in no time.”

Owed? What’s going on? Is Logan in some sort of debt to this guy?

“I uh... I tried. I have twenty grand, it’s all I could get a hold of.”

Is this what Logan was talking about when he said he had things going on that he wanted to keep me away from?

The man sighs disappointedly. “That’s not the news I’d hoped to hear, Cooper.” With a swift move of his head, his men surround us. I’m tugged in one direction while Logan is pulled in another. The man holding Logan is a tall beefy guy with a shaved head. He’s huge, easily 6’5” or even taller. I sneak a quick peak at the man holding me and I can’t believe what I’m seeing.

“David?”

No... It can’t be.

His eyes find mine. “I’m sorry, Ames.” His face is saddened, the unmistakable look of remorse painted across it.

“What are you doing here?”

“Amy!” The man exclaims, clapping his hands together loudly, and my attention snaps back to him. His eyes are wide with excitement as they take me in, and a wide smile stretches across his face. “What a pleasure it is to see you again.”

“Who are you?” I ask.

“My apologies for my lack of manners, Amy.” He steps towards me and I on instinct take a step back, knocking into David. “My name’s Donovan.”

My heart stops, a chill spreading throughout my body at the sound of his name.

Donovan.

As in, Donovan who had my dad killed?

“It’s you.” My voice is barely a whisper, my throat closing up, and I swallow hard around the dryness in my mouth. “You’re Donovan James.”

“You’ve heard of me,” he beams, “I’m honoured.”

“You… You killed my dad.” My voice wobbles as I speak the words out loud, and David’s body stiffens behind me.

“You’ll have to be more specific, sweetheart,” he says with a smirk. White-hot anger rises up from inside of me, heating my skin, my heart pounding against my ribs. How can he act so arrogant knowing what he’s done?

“Does killing people come that easily to you? Anthony Moore. He was a cop. An innocent man and you... you killed him.”

“I looked you up, you know” Donovan tells me, changing the subject which only irritates me more. “When I saw you at the garage last week you… let’s just say… piqued my interest. Moore... I knew I recognised that name. Imagine my surprise when I saw that you were the daughter of Anthony Moore. Damn shame. He was good cop from what I heard. Just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“So, you did kill him.”

“Ididn’t kill him, sweetheart, but he brought it on all by himself when he stuck his nose in business it didn’t belong in. But if it eases your pain any, he didn’t suffer. It was quick. I mean, all men deserve to die with dignity, even cops.”

“How can you act like this? Don’t you have any conscience at all?”

“Not in my line of work. No. It tends to get in the way,” he replies coolly. “I’m a man of my word, so when I want something done, I get it done. If only your boyfriend shared that mentality, we probably wouldn’t even be standing here now if he did.”

“What has Logan got to do with this? Why are we here?”

“Haven’t you been listening? Your boyfriend here has been a very naughty boy.” Donovan begins pacing back and forth in front of us slowly, his arms folded over his chest. “He took a loan he knew he couldn’t repay. I’m guessing this is the first time you’re hearing about this?”

I tense my jaw and avert my gaze to the floor, a mix of emotions surging inside of me. I’m angry at the fact that the man who killed my dad is just a few yards from me, I’m beyond confused with what is going on. Why didn’t Logan tell me he was in trouble? Why did he think he couldn’t come to me for help? But above all that, I’m scared. Scared of what is to come.

“I warned you, Cooper. Warned you what would happen if you made me look a fool, and that’s exactly what you’ve done. It could have been so easy, you brought all of this on yourself.” With a swift motion of Donovan’s hand, the man beside Logan swings for him, driving his fist into Logan’s stomach.

Logan groans in pain and a scream lodges itself in my throat as Logan doubles over. After another hit to the stomach, Donovan drops to a crouch beside Logan who’s now kneeling on the ground. Donovan reaches for his face and brings it up so he’s looking directly at me.
