If she hadn’t been waiting to see what he was going to do, she might have missed it.

But with her attention fixed on him, she felt his touch.

And she watched him move his hand to his mouth.

It was then that she saw the powdered sugar on the pad of his thumb.

He smiled at her. “Sorry,” his voice was little more than a whisper, “I should have used a napkin, huh?”

She pulled her bottom lip into her mouth and licked it before she let it go.

Harmony wondered if the taste of his skin was just as sweet as the powdered sugar.

She couldn’t taste anything else on her tongue.

“I liked it.”

it wasn’t so much an admission as a statement of fact.

He was looking at her with an expression she couldn’t quite name.

“Crois?”

She seemed to startle him and he reached into the container and picked up another beignet. He leaned closer, holding it out between his fingers.

Harmony smiled and leaned closer. Right before it would have brushed up against her lips, she opened her lips and closed them over his fingers.

Something changed in that moment.

Something inside of her.

Something elemental.

How had it happened?

With a simple touch from a man who was listening to her words and her actions.

When had she become so lucky?

Why?

Crois.

FOURTEEN

CROIS

After a while, when the food was done, he packed the dishes away and looked at Harmony. She looked like she was in a happy mood, a quiet smile on her face. “Better?”

She tipped her head to the side and sighed. “Much better.”

“Good.”

He looked at the door to her apartment. “Uh… I’m going to… uh, go and let you relax.”

There.
