And damn did I want to make her take it.

“I don’t know… I have a lot on my plate right now.”

“Just a newfriend, showing our new resident around a new town,” I reminded her.

I let that hang between us, and somehow, I knew I didn’t want to just be this woman’sfriend.

“Friends,” she says.

“If that’s what you want.”

“I guess it wouldn’t hurt to know the town. I’ve only been to the grocery store and the gas station.”

“Saturday?” I questioned, my chest puffing out at the victory. “I’ll take you to eat the best pizza in town.”

She laughed. “All right.”

“It’s a date.”

“No. It’s not a date,” she corrected. “It’s a tour.”

My phone vibrated with an incoming call. “Whatever you say, Angel. I gotta run. Call you tomorrow?”

“You know you can just text, right?” she deadpanned.

“Nah, then I can’t hear your voice.” I smirked.

“Bye, Preston.” I could practically hear her eye roll through the phone.

“Talk soon.”

I ended the call on a high but switched over to answer one of the calls that usually made the inevitable pit form in my stomach. I was hoping to get a decent night’s sleep with the fall semester kicking off in the morning, but I knew when I answered that wouldn’t be the case. It never was.

Preston

“Kolson, you throw like a pussy.”

“Fuck you, Ross,” Kolson clipped.

I clapped my hands. “How ’bout both of you shut up and run the play.”

Krew Kolson didn’t throw like a pussy. He had one the best arms I’d ever seen. Raw talent. Jagger Ross just liked to piss him off. These two were the only ones on the team who couldn’t seem to get along. The fact Jagger was a natural shit talker and he knew it fucked with Krew’s momentum only made it more tense. Jagger was brought in as the backup QB. He wanted the starting position so bad he could taste it. He was young and mouthy. Came straight here from a high school in Alabama. Krew was a Texas native and had a high chance of being drafted after this year.

“They aren’t even wearing pads,” Wesley muttered as he stood next to me.

“Did you expect anything different?” I blew my whistle, signaling for them to run a cool down lap.

“The new recruits look promising.” Theo stepped up, his eyes narrowed and focused.

We picked up three new players this year. One from Florida, one from North Dakota, and one from Oklahoma. Two fresh out of high school and one a transfer. All good kids with talent that could take them the distance if they put in the work.

I used my hand to shield the evening sun from my eyes. It was hot as a fuck out here. August in Texas was downright brutal, so keeping these guys hydrated was always one of our top priorities.

“Squid, you got those filled?” I asked, pointing to the coolers.

“Yes, sir.” A salute was sent my way by the man in charge of the H2O.
