Though usually, she was curled up next to him, dozing away. This time, though she wasn’t.

He sat up enough to look around, and saw her come out of the cleaner, and had dressed. She picked up her shoes and started slipping them on.

He raised his eyebrow. “Where are you going?”

“I don’t know. I’m just not tired.”

“You just bathed, instead of remaining here with me in the bed. That will wake anyone up.”

She shrugged. “I just couldn’t stop thinking. I thought if I bathed, I would relax.”

“What were you thinking about?”

“Everything,” she said, flopping on the bed. “You. Me. My family. Tori. Jana. Staying here versus going home. And how much I really want a sweet treat.”

He nodded. “I understand. You truly have been through a great deal recently. It is enough to make anyone crazed.”

“I tend to overthink, which helps nothing, either. I worry about Tori and Jana?—”

A soft thump coming from Tori and Olmed’s suite made him smile. “My instincts say they are well.”

“Okay, yeah.” She sat up. “I still want something sweet. A dessert or something.”

“Do sweet things help you relax?”

“Oh yeah. I thought I’d go down to the hallway that had the markets and stuff, and see what I could find.”

He sighed. “Give me a second. I’ll go with you.”

“You don’t think I can go by myself?” she asked, her hand on her little expandable weapon. He hadn’t even noticed that she’d put it on.

“No, I don’t. It is Standard Night down there. It will not be what you’re used to. Going alone is probably not a good thought.”

“Fine,” she said, though from the tone, he wondered if she really was that upset that he was going to go with her.

She almost sounded relieved.

“At least I get a delightful view for a few minutes,” she said, her eyes running over him as he rose from the bed.

“Look as you like,” he said.

He puffed his chest out a bit and stood straight and tall to show off his physique.

“Nice,” she said and licked her lips.

“You had better not look at me like that, or we’ll never go get your sweet treat.”

“Fine,” she said with an exaggerated sigh, and started looking away from him, getting off the bed.

He dressed and was about to slip on some shoes, when from the corner of his eye, he saw Polly slowly scanning the room, her body going from relaxed to frozen.

The room’s energy shifted.

“Polly?”

She didn’t move, but her hand landed on her bat again. Not playfully, though. Her eyes darted from one side to the other.

“Uh,” she said.
