Flirty was certainly an old muscle I was learning how to use again. Of course, he was helping me work it.
I had felt so wanton at his house. Of course, I’d convinced myself that the night was a one-time thing, would never happen again, and as soon as he was done with me, he’d be gone.
Because the idea that he’d want to stick around for anything else was ludicrous. I was a cold fish, as I’d been told for years by my ex.
And after you hear something enough times, you tend to believe it’s true.
So I let it all go. Truly let myself enjoy the experience because I knew there wouldn’t be more.
I was a frigid bitch, and I lived up to my name. So I expected nothing more.
Then he showed up today at the salon.
And I thought I would die.
Right there.
In the salon.
Die.
Melt.
Turn into a puddle of girly gushing goo.
Like Frosty was disappearing. How damn weird was that? I wasn’t sure what to do with this whole thing.
Maybe it was a good thing William called. He killed the mood. Sliced it like a sledgehammer.
I’d remained on edge ever since. Like he was just going to call and apologize to me? Like that was going to work. At all.
I don’t know what goes through that man’s head sometimes.
Maybe that’s the problem, I never really knew what went on in his head.
I opened the door to my mother’s house, and we walked in.
To chaos.
I stopped, barely giving Shaun room to come in behind me.
In the living room, just off the entrance, sat my two future brothers-in-law. Matthew Hennessey and Louie Castle.
And of course, Axel, Louie’s K9 partner, was hanging around Louie. In the distance, I could hear my sisters carrying on, and beyond that, I heard the chatter of Disney on the television, so evidently my niece was enjoying a cartoon.
“About time you got here,” Louie said. “I’m hungry.”
“Protecting your partner from being Disney-fied again?” I asked as we stepped into the room.
Louie laughed. “He won’t go to the TV room now.”
I glanced back at Shaun. “My niece turned the tough police dog here into a Frozen-themed princess puppy.”
Shaun smiled. Then took a step forward. “Shaun Delafrost.” He held out his hand to shake each one in turn.
“Louie Castle.”
“Matthew Hennessey.” After Matthew let go he smiled. “Need a beer? I would not advise going in there if I were you.”
