“I should have friggin’ known it was something like this,” Brian muttered as he went to the back of the shop, to strip out of his coveralls.
“I told you it probably was.”
“I hoped it wasn’t,” Brian said as he went out the back door, a wave of pungent smell following him through the building.
Shaun shook his head and went back to the boring part of his job. Paperwork and payroll. Though, really he could barely focus on it.
His thoughts darted back to his dinner with Winter. He wondered if she’d take him up on his offer for a steak.
In fact…
Hey. Still want a steak? – Shaun
He smiled and put his phone down, face down, behind him so he didn’t constantly check it. The business phone rang, and he talked to a client as Brian came back in, paperwork and his schedule in hand.
Shaun just hung up the phone and glanced at Brian. “You did get all the skunks, right?”
“There were only two. And yep, I got them. They were fat, too.”
Shaun’s eyes widened. “How fat.”
“The one was huge.” Brian raised his eyebrow. “You don’t think it could be pregnant? When do they have babies?”
“Probably. They have babies in February, March.”
“I’ll call Animal Control to get them.” Brian made the call to arrange for the pick-up.
Back to work it seemed.
Shaun started going through the master schedule to see what was coming up in the next few weeks. After he got off the phone, Brian updated the schedule book with the appointments he made as well.
“You know, you can give me all the spiders and rats in the world. Skunks, however—”
Shaun started laughing. “Listen, you’re fine. The animals are fine. Animal Control will come to get them today, I’m sure.”
“Going to be later. Like after five.”
Shaun shrugged. “I’ll take care of it. I don’t mind. I don’t have plans.”
“Thought you had that date with the salon gal?” Brian asked.
“It was Wednesday.”
“That bad?”
Shaun shook his head. “No.”
“Well? How did it go?”
“Fine.”
“Did you get laid?”
“No,” Shaun said.
“Did you want to?” Brian asked.
He raised his eyebrow. “We are not in high school.”
