Shaun shook his head.

“She’s out back smoking all the time.”

“Oh, right. I know which one you mean. She always smiles like she’s up to something.”

“She usually is plotting,” Winter said. “Or knows about something being plotted. Never in my life have I seen someone who can get anyone to tell them anything.”

“She’s that good?”

Winter nodded. “There’s something about her. Five minutes with her, and clients are telling deep family secrets and life stories.”

“Maybe she should work for the CIA.”

Winter laughed. A sincere one. And it was a great sound. “She could. Hell, she got me to tell her everything without saying a word. It’s weird.”

“She sounds like a challenge.”

“She would win. I promise,” Winter said.

Shaun laughed. “So, she convinced you to come out with me.” Deep down he wasn’t sure he liked the implication—that she had to be convinced to go out with him.

Did he really want to waste his time on a woman that had to be convinced to spend time with him?

He wasn’t a spring chicken anymore.

He didn’t have the desire for the games anymore.

He kept his mouth shut, letting Winter talk.

“Says I don’t get out enough. And I probably don’t. I do stuff with the family. And I work at the shop six days a week.”

“What do you do for fun?”

“Netflix and wine,” she said, and sort of smiled again when she spoke.

He laughed. Now that he could relate to. “Sounds like my evenings. What are you watching?”

“Mad Men. You?”

“Breaking Bad.”

She nodded. “I haven’t tried that. Is it good?”

He grinned. “Yeah. It’s pretty good. You know what it’s about, right?”

“Sort of,” she said.

And Shaun couldn’t help himself, he started a short explanation ofBreaking Bad’s story arc.

Surprisingly, Winter looked interested.

When he finished, she smiled. “I may have to try it.”

“Cool,” Shaun said.

Winter stared at him, her eyes sort of digging in like she was analyzing him. Not like she was scamming him or anything, but she certainly was taking him in from top to bottom.

“I have to say, I wondered if you would wear the exterminator uniform tonight.”
