“What?” I turned.

Shaun shook his head, his overgrown brown hair falling in his face. “Don’t. Let me.”

I took a step back. “Just go. And do the thing. And take care of it. I’m done,” I said.

He opened the door, and Audra was there.

“Oh thank God,” she said, darting out.

“Where is it?”

“Over there, behind the washing machine. It darted and we couldn’t get to it.”

Shaun nodded and went in. It was only then that I noticed he had a bag with him. “I have this. Give me a bit.”

“Do you need any help?” I heard myself ask.

He raised his eyebrow, his gaze darting down me. “You and your fancy shoes really want to come in here and help me catch a rat?”

I crossed my arms. “Me and my fancy shoes just want the rat gone. Whatever it takes to make it go away. If I have to help you, I will.”

“Well, then, miss, maybe you should.”

I nodded.

What had I gotten myself into?

Shaun Delafrost shook his head as he stepped inside the little break room with Winter on his heels. Or rather, she was in her heels.

He’d always seen the woman in some kind of heel to make her taller, and they were always the fancy type shoes.

He couldn’t imagine what her closet looked like.

Not that he’d spent a lot of time thinking about the brunette’s closet…

Okay, maybe he had.

Once or twice.

Maybe.

He turned and took in the terrain of the beauty shop’s break room. It was fairly clean, but it was also where they ate because there was trash that smelled of food.

A trash can rested on its side, the bag on the ground nearby, and from the chair on the floor, either the girls had gotten into a helluva fight or one of them tipped over the chair in her scramble to get on the table.

He shook his head.

Girls got so worked up over things.

He quietly took a couple of steps, listening for any rustling, though it was hard with the blow dryers going outside.

The door latched and Shaun noticed that Winter had closed it.

“So what now?” Winter asked.

Shaun put his finger over his lips to shush her.
