“But we still haven’t managed to reverse the disasters,” said Adi.
They went through the list of places again, double-checking the landmarks, disasters, and solutions. Beck wandered around, looking at the items on the shelves in more detail.
“It all makes sense,” Carter said, moving the sodium hydroxide back and forth between Thailand and Indonesia. “I don’t know what else it could be.” She glanced up at the frozen digital clock. How much more time had passed? Ten minutes? Fifteen?
She scanned the shelves again. Her attention landed on a small red sandbag, the type used for playing cornhole at the county fair. The pictures rotated back to the Sydney Opera House, half covered in water.
Carter gasped. “It’s not a tsunami, it’s a flood! Quick, Beck!”
She grabbed the sandbag and tossed it at Beck, who caught it one-handed. He yanked off the sponge and slapped down the bag of sand.
All the lights in the room turned green, and Carter heard the most beautiful words in the world.
“Team Helsing, you have escaped!”
Interview Room: Alicia Angelos
SEASON FOUR
END OF ROUND TWO: TREASURES OF THE DEEP
Though Alicia is usually cheerful during her interviews, nowher smile is tight, her spine stiff as she sits on a high-backed throne. The wetsuit from the round has been unzipped to her waist, revealing a white bikini top. She rolls a red gemstone between her palms.
“Alicia,” says Fitzy, dismayed. “What happened?”
“It was a rough one,” she admits. “We were hungry. And thirsty.”
“And snarky.”
She cocks an eyebrow. “But we still finished in good time.”
“That you did.”
“Better than Sierra’s team.”
“I can’t comment on that.”
“One day I’ll catch you out, Fitzy.”
“I sure hope not,” he says, making himself comfortable on his own high-backed throne.
“It’s lucky I solved Louis’s clue.”
“Look for the Verne.Honestly, I still don’t get it.”
“You should try picking up a book some time.Twenty Thousand Leagues?”
“No idea, mate. I’m nothing but a pretty face.”
“It’s a classic.” She holds the red gemstone up to the light and smiles dreamily. “One of the Game Master’s favorites.”
“No kidding. Although, interestingly, another contestant figured it out even quicker than you.”
“What?” Alicia snaps out of her reverie. “Who?”
“I’m sure you can guess.”
Alicia smiles, but her fist tightens around the gemstone. “Yes. I’m sure I can.”
