“I guess we’ll have to continue this after dinner,” Bex says, going over to stir the chicken. “I’d hate not to feed you.”

“I could survive.” I go back to my own chopping, but keep stealing peeks at Bex.

Tonight feels like one of those nights that I’ll remember forever. I felt connected to Bex before tonight, but now? Now it feels different. Like each of us opened up a new part of ourselves to share with the other.

I have no idea what the future holds for the two of us. All I can hope is that when we share the news of our relationship, we can still have these quiet moments. I don’t want to have to live our lives for public consumption.

I want this cabin. Spending the evenings making dinner together. Watching football during the offseason. Playing pond hockey together.

I only want Bex.

“Thank you for giving me this part of yourself. For showing me this side of you, Bex.”

“You’re the only one I trust with it.”

“I love you.”

She shifts and peers up at me. “I love you too.”

“Do you think you’ll get tired of hearing it?”

Because I’ve only said it a handful of times to her, but I want to shout it from the rooftops. That I love this woman and she is mine.

“Never.”

“Then I’ll never stop saying it, Bex.”

That is one promise I have no problem making.
