I hold up the carrier, as if she can see him, but it’s too dark out here. “A bit of a temperature, but other than that, he should be okay.”

Bex assesses me, almost as if debating what to say next. “Want to grab something to eat?” She nods to the diner behind us.

“I don’t think he’s allowed in.”

“Doesn’t matter. We can eat in my car.” The car behind me beeps. “Get Oreo situated and I’ll grab us something to eat.”

I don’t have time to answer before she’s pushing open the door to the diner and striding up to the counter.

“I guess we’re having dinner with her,” I tell Oreo.

Opening the door to Bexley’s SUV, I get in the front seat, turn on the lights, and pull Oreo out of his carrier. By the time I give him a dose of the meds and get him curled up in his blanket, Bexley is opening the door with the greasiest-smelling food imaginable.

And it smells fucking delicious. “I got a little bit of everything.”

“It smells great.”

Bex sets two milkshakes in the cupholders and pulls out a burger, chicken fingers, a patty melt, and fries.

“I might have gone overboard.” Bex laughs. “I didn’t know what you’d want.”

Now that I’m not as worried about Oreo, I’m starving. “This is great.”

I grab a few fries and take a bite of a chicken tender.

“How did I not know you have a bunny?” Bex asks, picking up the patty melt and taking a bite. “Cassie would have a field day with you if she knew.”

I smile back at her, dunking a chicken finger into the ketchup cup she brought with her. “And that’s exactly the reason I haven’t told anyone about him. I don’t think he’d like the attention.”

Bex quirks a brow at me and sets her sandwich down. “He wouldn’t, or you wouldn’t?”

“Am I that easy to read?”

“Yes.” She holds her hands out. “Can I hold him?”

“Just be gentle,” I tell her as I pass him off to her. Bex sets Oreo in her lap and rubs the fur between his ears.

“You’re cute,” she tells him.

God, how I wish she were talking to me. The smile that sits on her face is one of pure adoration. It’s how everyone looks at Oreo. How can you not? He’s fucking adorable.

“Everyone loves him.”

“I can see why.” Her eyes flit up to mine. The low light in the car catches them and it does more funny things to my insides.

Maybe I need to see a doctor. I shouldn’t be having these kinds of reactions to a woman looking at me. Especially not Bexley.

I shouldn’t be as taken with her as I am.

“He’s pretty much always this cute. Except when he’s eating. Then he’s really fucking cute.”

“Okay, you need to bring him over the next time you come.”

“Maybe I should just start bringing him on dates.”

Bexley laughs, warm and bright, before going back to her meal. “I think that’s one way of breaking the ice.”

“But…” I grab a fry and swipe it through ketchup before chomping down on it.
