Oh yeah. This is what I was hoping would happen tonight. I back her up against the wall. Glancing in both directions, I confirm we’re the only two here. With the locker room behind me, I know there’s still a chance someone could come out at any minute.

I lick a path up her neck before whispering, “I played for you tonight.”

Angie’s hands fist in my suit jacket. Coach’s requirements—no looking like slobs at the game.

“I know you did.” Her head tilts to the side, letting me have better access.

“I liked knowing you were in the stands.”

“Watching you play made me…” Her words trail off.

“Made you what?” I nibble on the pulsing vein in her neck.

I think I have a pretty good idea what the game did to her tonight.

“Hot. I’m so fucking turned on right now, Troy, I don’t know what I’ll do.”

A door opens behind us, breaking the trance I’m in.

“Meet me at my car in ten minutes.”

Chapter Twenty-Three

ANGIE

Anticipation is going to overwhelm me. It’s been twenty minutes since Troy told me to meet him by his Jeep.

I’m pacing back and forth, waiting for him, when my phone buzzes in my pocket. I’m half expecting it to be him, but it’s not. My heart sinks at the name lighting up my phone.

Scanning the parking lot and seeing it’s still empty, I slide to answer.

“Hey Dad.”

“Angela. I haven’t talked to you this week. Just wanted to check in and see how your last semester of college is starting out.”

“It’s good, Dad.”

“Good? That’s it? I haven’t talked to you in a week and that’s all I get?”

I laugh, trying to break up the tightness in my chest. It’s getting harder and harder to keep the truth from him. Instead of picking up when he calls, I send him to voicemail.

“Sorry. I’m just focusing on my schoolwork. Of course, Harper keeps dragging me out, so I’m getting a nice social life too.”

His laugh rings through the phone. “Don’t sound so upset by that. Colin would be so disappointed you’re not breaking any rules.”

“I’m sure he would be.” The king of breaking the rules, Colin James. My godfather.

Yet, here I am. Breaking the biggest rule of all. One that I see exiting the arena now.

“Listen, Dad, I’ve got to go.”

“Don’t forget, we’ll be visiting Grandma and Grandpa next month for their big anniversary.”

“Uh-huh.” I don’t hear his words as I see a familiar figure heading toward me.

“Everything okay?”

“Great, fine. Love you.”
