Coach blows the whistle and I take off skating toward the blue line. As soon as my skate hits it, I’m back in the other direction before turning and skating toward center ice.

I hate these drills. The worst of the worst.

Today I’m able to push through because I know what’s waiting for me.

There’s a pep to my step as I leave the rink and head to meet Angie. I could get used to this.

I really could.

I take the well-worn path to the study rooms that Angiealways books for us. I like that she wants us to have a private space to study. No point in sitting out in the middle of the library where everyone can come up and interrupt us.

“Hey Ang.”

“Someone’s in a good mood.”

I drop down into the seat next to her and give her a loud smacking kiss on the cheek. “My coach told me that my professors emailed him that my grades are passing. Well, good actually.”

“Are you serious?”

Her excitement matches my own.

“He said to keep it up next semester.”

“So I guess what you could say is that I’m keeping my starting position too?” She waggles her eyebrows at me.

“You, Ms. Brooks-Young, are not going anywhere.”

Not for a very long time, if I have any say about it.
