Chapter Nine
TROY
“Where are you running off to?”
I pull the T-shirt over my head and glance over at Marcus.
“Study session today.”
He gives me a cursory glance. “You’ve been studying a lot lately.”
“Because if I don’t, I’m going to fail and then get kicked off the hockey team.”
“Yeah, but I feel like I haven’t seen you in weeks.”
“Wizard, we live together and play together. I see you every day.”
He waves me off. “You know what I mean. We haven’t hung out together in ages.”
“Aww, are you feeling neglected?” I rub his still-damp hair from the shower.
“Fuck off.”
“You have Harper. Don’t act like you’ve been around.”
Marcus’s eyes glaze over. No doubt he’s thinking about her. If he’s not at hockey practice, he’s spending time with her. I’ve never seen the guy so loved up.
“It’s our senior year. We should at least see each other more than when required.”
“Then you want to go out tonight?” I ask him, throwing everything in my gym bag to take home. “I hear the football team is having a party.”
“Harper and I were supposed to go out, but maybe all four of us could?”
Going out with Angie? So far, the only thing we’ve done together is study. Is going to a party together considered a date?
“I’ll ask her, but no promises.”
“Will you come if she doesn’t want to go?” Marcus stands, and we head out of the locker room, waving goodbye to the other guys.
“And be a third wheel? Fuck that.”
“Ouch. I see where I stand.”
“Marcus.” I drop my arm around his shoulders and pull him toward me. “It’s where I stand. And I’m totally fine with it.”
“Get off me, asshole.” His tone is playful. “Where doyoustand with Angie?”
“She’s my tutor.”
“And?”
“And what? That’s it.”
Marcus shakes his head at me. “Would you be studying this much with your tutor if it were anyonebutAngie?”
“Yes,” I lie.
I’d probably be doing more studying on my own if I’m honest. There’s something about Angie that makes me want to be around her. Was she standoffish at first? Yes. But now that I’ve gotten to know her, there’s more to her.
