“Leave your sister alone.” Harper swats at him.

“Going that well, huh?”

My godfather still looks as fit as ever. He didn’t play as long as my dad, but still looks like he could suit up in a game of football if he needed to. And even with gray streaks through his hair, his face is still young and playful. He’s always been this way.

It’s why I love him so much. He never lets anything get him down. He and my Aunt Peyton were always people I could turn to when I needed them.

I don’t know why I didn’t think of asking for theiradvice sooner. Maybe it would’ve prevented this situation from happening at all.

“It’s fine. Semester will be over soon.”

“And then you’ll be back with us in Denver.”

“Yup.” I pop thep. Sarcasm is heavy. The very last thing I want to do now is go back to Denver.

“Did I miss something?” This time, Colin looks confused.

“Angela. Nick.” Dad barely looks at me, addressing Nick. “Your grandpa is going to give a welcome toast. We’d like for you two to be there for it.”

“Whatever you say, Dad.” I give him a sickly sweet smile that twists his face up in annoyance.

“Can we please put aside this…situation for the night?”

“Situation?” Is he serious with this? “You threatening to disown me is more than a situation.”

“Angela.” He rubs his forehead, like I’m the source of the problem. “Please.”

“Okay, I’m definitely missing something,” Colin interjects.

“Angie is dating Derek Hollins’s son,” Nick tells him as he stands.

“Nick. You are not helping the ‘situation’!” I shout at him.

“What? He asked.”

Nick shrugs a shoulder and heads into the kitchen. Sometimes I hate how literal my brother can be. He is a genius—certified, at that. He could have already graduated from college if my dads didn’t want him to have a more normal life.

At the rate he’s going, he’ll be able to finish grad school by the time he’s twenty. If only he used that big brain of his to keep his mouth shut.

“Wait, seriously?” Uncle Colin asks, eyes flittingbetween me and my dad. “You’re shitting me?”

Both of us glare at him.

“Okay, when you both do that, it’s weird.” Colin turns his eyes to me. “When I told you to break the rules a little, I didn’t mean this.”

“Why is who Angie chooses to love that big of a deal?” Harper shouts. “Troy is the perfect man for her and cares about her. So what if you and his dad don’t get along?”

I wince, waiting for the words to hit my dad. He is not going to be happy.

“I’m sorry…love?”

“Oh shit. I made things worse, didn’t I?” Harper asks, regret written on her face.

“It’s not helping, no.”

“You’re in love with him?” Dad asks again.

“Yes, I am.”
