Except my ex-husband has denied the application.

Fucking ex-husbands.

He doesn’t know who he’s messed with.

ChapterTwo

SIMON

“You’re such a wanker.”

“You just can’t take being a sore loser.”

Taking a swig of my water, I squirt a stream of it at Pierce, one of my oldest friends. “I wouldn’t be a sore loser if you didn’t cheat.”

“Who says I’m cheating?”

“Me.” I wipe the sweat from my brow. “You were offside and you know it!”

He gives me a cocky grin. “If the ref didn’t call it, it wasn’t cheating.”

This is the problem with playing footie with friends—Liam wasn’t paying attention because his new girl was here watching us play.

“We need new refs,” I grumble, collapsing on the bench.

“Or maybe you just need to play better.”

I flip him off, grabbing the neck of my shirt and pulling it off. With the heat of the London day now gone, I grab a hoodie and pull it over. The rest of the team has long since left the field.

“Beer?” Pierce hands me an ice-cold bottle.

Twisting off the cap, I clink my beer with his. “Cheers, you lousy cheat.”

“Ahh, Simon. You’ll learn eventually you can never beat me.”

“Careful, or I’m going to send you with newbies to America.”

“You wouldn’t dare.”

“My company. I can send whoever I please.” This time, it’s me with the smug grin.

“You’d really do that to poor Charlotte?”

“She’d say it’s your own fault.”

Pierce laughs, a dopey look coming over his face. “You’re right. She would.”

These days, the only time I see Pierce is at our weekly football match. With two kids now and a princess for a wife, all his spare time is spent with his family.

Not that I can blame him. I’ve had my fair share of girlfriends these last few years, but none of them want to compete with the job.

And none of them can. Work comes first.

“You still planning on coming over to discuss logistics?” Pierce leans back on his elbows, sipping on his beer.

“If you need me to.” I eye him over my own drink. The lights on the field are bright as the city noise gets quieter. “Nervous about taking the family overseas for the first time?”

“Not me. Charlotte is.”
