“And if I might add, she’s what you need too,” Juliette said, her gaze on me.
Their echo of John’s statement the night the girl broke the mirrors shocked me. Not wanting to examine the truth behind the words, I narrowed my eyes at my friend, warning her she didn’t know what she was talking about.
She rewarded me with an air kiss. “You look like you want to spank me,mon chérie.” She turned her back on me and smacked her arse. “Have at it.” She winked over her shoulder.
Mark laughed, his eyes darting between the two of us. “I’ll leave you two to whatever game this is as I have another meeting.” He pulled our attention. “Call me any time you want me to come over or if you need advice, Xavier.” He held out his hand.
I accepted his handshake. “Thanks for coming through, Mark. Appreciate it.”
“Any time.”
I watched him walk toward Ramone, one of the bodyguards, who guided him to the helipad at the side of the property and then turned to Juliette. “One of these days, you’re going to get your wish, Jules,” I threatened.
Her laugh was that sultry version she used to charm the men she dominated. “Somehow, I doubt that.” I didn’t ask why, and she added, “I think your heart’s already taken, and you’re not likely to play any time soon.”
That had me frowning. “Taken by whom?”
“Figure it out,mon chérie.” She was already sashaying down to her car before I could respond.
After her car sped down the driveway, did it occur to me that she was referring to my house guest. Shaking my head, I recalled my grandfather’s words after I asked him how Sinclair men would know when they’d fallen in love if the curse was ever broken.
“Sometimes, you’re blind to the reflection of your heart on your face that others can see with their eyes wide open while you choose to keep yours closed.”
At sixteen, I figured I was too young to understand what he meant. Now, I wasn’t sure I was ready to understand it.
Chapter 24 – Xavier
“Hello, Father.”
I looked up from my laptop an hour later as Saint entered the study. “This is a nice surprise. When did you get in?” Smiling, I stood to accept his embrace.
“This morning. I didn’t want to disturb you, so I rode with Rhett.” He slid into the seat on the opposite side with his concerned eyes on me.
“Levana with you?” I asked, hoping to distract his questions that were sure to come. Saint never liked to see me worried.
As if he were onto my evasion, he smiled. “Studies are keeping her busy for a bit. She’ll join us in a few weeks if I stay longer.”
