“Nope.” She shook her head. “You don’t have to believe in fate, it just happens.”

I sipped the hot chocolate she placed in front of me, wondering if I really wanted to meet a guy that lied to me and manipulated me into kissing him. Grinning, I rolled my eyes and followed my cousin back into the living room.

Zayne aka Gabriel(29 years)

Watching the yellow Beetle fire up and hightail it out of the parking lot, I grinned. Now that was one fucking interesting date. Even as I stared at the taillights making a slow getaway, I wasn’t sure why I hadn’t continued with the deception about being Jake Steiner. The lies had bubbled to the surface as soon as she introduced herself. Yet the second she stepped out of the restaurant for some crazy reason, I couldn’t continue lying. What was it about that woman—a woman I’d known all of ten minutes that had me offering up the truth, despite knowing the potential risk to the both of us?

Fishing my ringing mobile out of my jeans pocket, I answered, “she’s clean and innocent. The bugs in place.”

“How do you—wait, let me guess, the pat-down gave you a boner,” Declan sniggered.

“Fuck off. I got what I came for.” I stared at the plastic holder in my hand. Somehow, they’d managed to create a memory card that looked like a contact lens. Once on, the wearer would view the information like a normal screen. Clever fucks could easily avoid detection if it were seized in a random security check.

“One down, one to go, right?” Declan asked.

“Yeah. Do we have eyes on Rex?”

“He’s with the girlfriend.”

“I need to watch him closely. I have a feeling when this girl gets home, he might not be too happy. Start listening in until I get there.”

“Sure thing.”

“And our friend Nathaniel?”

“Warm and toasty. I think that drug you gave him, worked a little too well. The guy hasn’t even taken a piss since you left.” Declan snorted a laugh.

“Yeah, it’s some serious shit I picked up in Africa on my last visit. See you in a few.” I cut the call.

Before the date, I’d returned to Nathaniel’s place to get the details for the meet, he’d offered me a drink and knowing he planned to follow me, I’d laced his drink. The powder was so subtle, just a pinch quickly dissolved and it made the drinker space out like he would on too much marijuana. The difference, he couldn’t move to save his fucking life. When he finally woke, he’d remember shit and feel as if he’d had a very restful sleep.

Now, after the taillights of the car disappeared around a sharp curve in the road, I slipped behind the wheel of my car. The throaty roar of the engine purring to life, filling the night air brought a smile to my face. My heart possessed two loves. The black Dodge Challenger currently rumbling under my body as I shot out the parking lot and the silver Colt Python .357 Magnum sitting in the glovebox.

Not wanting to scare the girl away, I hadn’t carried the gun into the restaurant. Stupid maneuver to go in unprotected but my hands were just as lethal as the weapon I carried. Fortunately, there’d been no hiccups. This time. I could hear Declan’s nagging in my ear if he found out I’d gone in unprotected. But, I needed Nathaniel to trust me to get this done tonight.
