She shook her head. “I’m fine, thanks.”
But her stomach growling out told me a very different story.
“Are you sure about that?” I asked.
She shook her head and rolled her eyes. “It’s fine. I’ll come downstairs and—.”
I stood to my feet. “No, you won’t. I’ll be back in a bit with some food.”
“Axton.”
“Brielle.”
She chewed on the inside of her cheek. “You really don’t need to do this.”
“I know.”
“So, why are you?”
I shrugged. “Because I don’t know how else to apologize.”
She studied me for a long time after I spit that out. But, to my shock, she caved.
“I could use a drink to take some more medicine. My legs ache,” she said softly.
I nodded before I headed for the bedroom door. “Give me twenty minutes.”
It didn’t even take me that long to throw something together. A bit of grilled cheese, some soup to dip it in. A soda and some ice water, in case she wanted some variety. It had been days since I’d felt that useful. Since I felt like our efforts were geared toward something worthwhile. And as I carried the tray of food back up to her side, I relished the relief that crossed her face when she took her first bite.
“How many cheeses did you use for this?” she asked.
I reached for her medicine and popped it open. “Three.”
“Mmm, mm, mm, so good. Thank you, Axton.”
I smirked as I dumped two pills into my palm. “Here, take these. You should be good now that you’ve got some food in your stomach.”
She took them from me, and the soft scraping of her fingernails against my skin sent a cascade of shivers down my spine. I watched her part those soft, shimmering lips of hers before she tossed those pills back, taking them like a champ. She barely chased them down, for fuck’s sake!
I wondered what that mouth could do to other things.
“How are you feeling?” I asked, breaking the silence in the hopes that my cock would stay put.
She took a bite of the soup and her eyes fluttered closed. “Oh, God, Axton. This is amazing.”
I drew in a deep, sobering breath. “I’m glad you like it.”
“Fuck,” she whispered as she took another large bite of her grilled cheese.
I twirled my fist into the comforter to keep my lid from blowing. “Can I get you anything else?”
She groaned as she dipped her grilled cheese into her soup and took a bite. “Dinner. You can bring me this exact combination for dinner.”
I chuckled. “Consider it done.”
“Jesus,” she moaned.
I had to get out of there. I’d never be able to contain myself if she kept making those kinds of noises.
