It grew easier to breathe with him standing there.

“Church time,” Axton said. “Leave her here. We have to talk.”

“I’ll be up in a bit,” Maverick said.

The man peeked around his body, and I turned my head away so that I didn’t have to face him.

So that I didn’t have to face my executioner.

“Uh huh,” Axton said. “All right, but don’t fuck around down here. The guys are already upstairs.”

Guys? What guys? Holy fuck, there were more guys.

“It’s okay,” Maverick said, turning to face me once more, “he’s gone.”

I elongated my neck and peered over his shoulder only to find that he was right. Just as quickly as Axton had appeared, he was gone again.

“Church? What’s—what’s church?” I asked breathlessly.

Maverick grinned as his thumb swiped over my chin. “Had some grease on there.”

I glared at him. “What is church, Maverick?”

Jesus, I thought his eyes were hazel, but as he stared at me, they looked more green than hazel. “It’s a meeting we’re about to have where it’s revealed that we’ve fucked up in taking you. So, I’d expect these binds to be off your body in no time.”

“Wait, really?”

He tucked a strand of loose hair behind my ear. “Really, really.”

“So, so that means I—I can go home? I can—go see my kids? Get back to work?”

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet.”

Tears immediately streaked my cheek. “I swear to you, I won’t tell anyone. I’m super good at keeping secrets.”

“I bet you are,” he said as he raised up.

“My kids and their parents trust me with them all the time. I can keep this. I swear, Maverick, I can! Just let me go home!”

He walked toward the stairs. “We’ll see one another soon.”

“Maverick, please! Don’t leave me alone down here! I swear, I won’t tell anyone! I’m a good secret-keeper! Maveriiiiiiiiiick!”

But the only sound that answered me was the sound of the door upstairs thudding closed.

Leaving me with nothing except my racing thoughts.

MAVERICK

“Maverick, please!”

My cock stiffened as I worked my way up the steps.

“Don’t leave me down here!”

“How I wish I didn’t have to,” I murmured as I got up the steps.
