“Good.”
I reached down and took the book from her, only that time I turned around and threw it against the wall. It knocked over the drink I had poured for her, sending ice water spewing everywhere. I chuckled as I turned to face her. I waited for my punishment. For whatever wrath she thought she could bring down upon me. But, as I stood there, my arms opened wide, I--.
“Motherfucker,” I hissed as her fist landed straight against my gut.
My arms came down slowly at my sides as my head tilted. The ticklish sensation wafted throughout my body, and I couldn’t help the grin that crawled across my face. I had to admit, I wasn’t sure she would have done anything. She was brave, I’d give her that.
But, she was stupid.
And it would get her killed if she wasn’t careful.
“Is that all you’ve got?” I asked.
Her gaze slowly panned up to my face, and the look of determination etched in her features quickly melted into one of fear.
Oh, that’s the good stuff.
I took a step toward her, cloaking her in my shadow. “Are you afraid of me, girl?”
Despite her widened eyes, she held firm. “My name is Naomi, thanks.”
“I don’t give a damn what your name is. What I want to know is why.”
“Why… what?”
It was the one question that had lingered in the back of my mind for days. Ever since she had thrown herself at us. Ever since I had seen those luscious tits of hers enter her father’s bedroom before she did, gripping onto that damn shovel she thought she could actually swing around.
There was one question I still couldn’t answer for myself.
“Why did you take your father’s place?” I asked as my voice lowered.
She didn’t hesitate to answer. “It’s my father, Ranger. He’s ill. He would’ve never survived a day without his meds, much less the week that I’ve been here.”
A week? Feels longer than that.“And yet, you’ve managed to make your rounds with two of my men.”
The grin that slid across her face lit up those gem-colored eyes of hers. “Not my problem you guys are my only entertainment.”
I shook my head. “Not any longer. You’ve gained access to our relaxation room, and now this room. It’s your fault if you’re still bored.”
She stood on the bed, putting her at eye level with me. “Say what you want and get the hell out, Ranger.”
“I swear, that’s the cutest part about you?”
She blinked. “What is?”
I reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “The fact that you think you have control.”
She yanked away from my touch the second the words fell from my lips. “I’ve always got more control than people give me credit for.”
“Including your fiancée?”
That seemed to suck the breath out of her lungs. She opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out. Open, nothing, closed.
Open, nothing, closed.
Like a damn guppy in a goldfish bowl.
“You want to know what I think?” I asked as I pointed my finger into her chest.
