His rifle made its littleTHWP!sound before he responded. “I took out their tires so they couldn’t get away, don’t worry about that.”
My heart sank. “Thanks.”
Angel paused. “Is that not what we were doing? Stranding them here?”
Another movement to my left, another bullet that left the chamber and sank a man to his knees. “No, that’s exactly what we wanted. Good work.”
“Angel doesn’t believe you, and neither do I,” Viper said as he panted for air.
“You ready for that explosion?” I asked.
“Yep, in position,” he said breathlessly.
“Reaper? Whenever you’re ready,” I said.
He answered me with a flashbang before smoke filled my face. I took a large step through it, holding my breath while someone else coughed before a splash of water hit my ears. Something wet splashed against my left thigh, and when I turned my head, I found some big ass numbnuts flailing around in the water.
“One less body to toss to the ocean,” I murmured.
“No, no, no, no!” the man exclaimed. “Don’t!”
I tilted my head. “Did you have mercy on the women that begged you?”
His lower lip quivered. “Please, I just—”
As I pulled the trigger and sank a bullet between his eyes, I found that I no longer cared. I didn’t care about their excuses or their lives. I didn’t care about their moral codes or whatever redemption I would have loved to offer them. They had chosen to follow Bullet. They had chosen to rape those women. They had chosen to get into this game, and none of them had ever taken the chance of walking away.
I didn’t feel one ounce of remorse as I watched that man’s body sink into the red splotch of ocean his own blood had created for him. And as bubbles rose to the surface, with his face sinking beneath the ocean tide, I drew in a deep breath.
Before another explosion rocked me on my feet.
“Everyone in position C?” I asked.
“Me and Julia are good,” Reaper said.
“On the other side of the roof,” Angel said.
“Ready when you are,” Viper said.
“Getting there,” Goose said with a grunt.
Bender stepped out of the smoke with a smile on his face. “Ready to get these girls out of there?”
I reached for the unlocked container door. “I’ve been ready. Let’s go.”
Bender grabbed the other handle and, together, we yanked those motherfucking doors open. The smell of urine and shit made me wrinkle my nose, but I did my best to breathe through my mouth so that I didn’t have to stomach the thought. Bender clicked on a flashlight and illuminated the faces of scared, sobbing young women who were shivering, despite the fact that the container was fucking sweltering.
“Angel?” Bender asked.
“What’s up?”
“You said you shot out those tires?” he asked.
“Yeah. Why?”
I looked over at Bender. “We need you to place a phone call if you think Nadia will bring that bus to come help us.”
“Why? What’s going on?” Goose finally piped up.
