It shocked me when he slid out of bed. “Not right now.”

I quirked an eyebrow. “Not right now? Are you serious? I think now is the perfect time to talk about it.”

“Well, you’re not the only one in this equation.”

I scoffed. “All righty, then. Yeah.”

I watched as every single muscle in his back tensed. His shoulders rose, and the second he balled his fists up at his side, my biggest nightmare crashed down onto my lap.

“Don’t do this,” I said.

Caleb turned to face me. “It was a mistake, and you know it.”

I heard his words, but it took me a second to process them. “Wait a second, a mistake?”

He nodded plainly. “Yes.”

I blinked. “You think last night was a mistake.”

“I do, yes.”

I slowly tilted my head. “You actually convinced yourself that what we shared last night was a mistake.”

“What we shared last night was a bit of lust. That’s all.”

I set my coffee down onto the tray and slid out of bed. If this was how he wanted things to go down, then I’d go down swinging.

“Funny, because I thought it was perfect,” I said as I folded my arms across my chest.

“Then, I did my job right.”

My jaw hit the floor. “And what in the fuck is that supposed to mean?”

“Look, there’s enough drama going on right now, and the last thing we need is—”

“You think I don’t know that?” I spat. “But I know what I felt last night. I know what I saw in your eyes. I know that what we shared meant something to the both of us, and I’m not going to stand here and listen to you spout some bullshit because you’re trying to get me to run.”

And when he didn’t respond, I knew I had hit the nail on the head.

“You think you’re not easy to read any longer?” I asked with a smirk upon my face. “You’re easier to read than ever, Caleb. We were best friends for years. There isn’t anything you can hide—”

“Last night didn’t mean anything to me, Rose.”

He said it so plainly, and my heart sank into my stomach. “What?”

He sighed and every single muscle in his body relaxed. “It may have meant something to you, but it didn’t mean anything to me. I’ve been so pent-up lately from all of the stress around here—”

“Don’t.”

“—and there was an opportunity to—”

I gnashed my teeth together. “Shut up.”

“Rose, I didn’t want to have this conversation now. But you have to understand—”

“I said, shut the fuck up!” I exclaimed.

The room went silent as I drew in deep breaths to keep my tears at bay. No. This wasn’t happening. Caleb wasn’t doing this to me. Caleb would never.
