“Fuckers,” I murmured to myself.
I pulled into a parking spot next to my sister’s car and walked inside with the food. She poked her head out of one of the side offices and waved me in, so I didn’t pass go and I sure as hell didn’t collect two-hundred dollars. I eased into the small office space and closed the door behind me, then divvied out food without so much as a word.
And after I sat in front of her desk, she dug out her animal style fries from the brown paper bag.
“So, we’ve had these two women show up at the shelter today with some very interesting claims,” she said.
I sipped on my root beer. “Yeah? What are they claiming?”
She took a large bite of cheesy fries. “They are claiming that they’ve escaped from captivity from one of the Devil’s Rage warehouses.”
I blinked. “Captivity?”
She nodded. “Their words, not mine.”
I shrugged as I took another pull from my drink. “Sucks to suck, I guess.”
Nadia pinned me with a glare. “They’re claiming they were sex slaves.”
At her statement, I froze. I slowly lifted my gaze to hers and I knew I couldn't ignore it. Even though I knew it would dig me deeper into a hole I had no idea how to climb out of, I couldn’t allow that to slide by.
Sex slaves? In our hometown?
“Did they say if there were any others?” I asked.
Nadia shook her head. “They were already hysterical when they came in. They had run here, in the dark, and they were completely disoriented. I told them they were safe here for as long as they needed to be here. But my gut is telling me that there are more of them somewhere out there.”
I closed my eyes, trying to settle my racing thoughts. “Twin Bays has to know about this.”
“I figured you’d feel that way, and for once we’re on the same page. If they are abducting women in our town, or even from other towns and bringing them here, the people deserve to know about it so they can protect themselves.”
I reached for my burger. “I’ll fucking put that shit on Twitter if I have to. Fuck not having a job. I’ll make my own damn blog and post it everywhere if it gets the word out.”
“Do you think Angel and his guys know about it?”
I paused. “Who the hell is Angel?”
Then, my mind raced back to when I had ended up parked in front of their clubhouse. When Bender took me inside and introduced me to everyone.
And I realized that the Steel Scorpion staring at her that afternoon had been Angel.
“Nadia,” I said with a tone of warning in my voice.
She pointed her spoon at me. “Oh, you’ve got no leg to stand on right now. That much is for certain, so don’t even try.”
I sighed. “Are you seeing him? Please, don’t tell me you’re fucking him.”
She giggled. “Like you’re fucking Bender?”
My face paled. “How does literally everyone know about that?”
She sighed. “Seriously, though. Do you think they’re in on this somehow? Do you think they know?”
I leaned back heavily into the chair. “Honestly? I don’t know, and I’m sure that I want to know.”
She reached for her fries. “You know, they aren’t the first women to come here claiming something like that.”
I balked. “Wait, what!?”
