Then Chloe looked at him and he knew that she was beginning to feel the effects of exhaustion from the length of the day, the physical and the mental pressure.
“On to our room! ‘After all,’” he quoted, “‘tomorrow is another day!’”
They managed to escape. To reach their cabin.
And there, Chloe almost threw herself down on the sofa, before she looked up at him.
“I know you’re exhausted. I am, too—”
“He said something, Wes,” Chloe said. “Something I don’t think you heard.”
“And—”
“Daniel said it, Wes. Daniel said it to Jeff, before that comment about things being messed up,” Chloe told him.
“And—”
“He said six people. Six people, supposedly just sitting there. Six people dead. Too much, way too much!”
Wes stared at her.
The comments weren’t enough.
Not to arrest someone.
But that they had been said by one of the men to the other was...
That fact, if not damning, at the very least intriguing.
And whether it was one of the two men who was guilty—or if it was both of them—it suddenly seemed to solidly reinforce a theory they’d been working with.
Somethingwasplanned for the cruise.
Something big.
Nine
Chloe did wake easily, at the least sound.
Therefore, of course, she heard the door click. It was just about 3:00 a.m. when it did so and she flew out of bed, swiftly grabbing her 3D-printed gun and heading out to the parlor area.
Wes had his hand on the doorknob, hesitating, wincing at the sound he had created that had awakened her.
“What is going on?” she demanded.
“I’m not sure. I heard someone out in the hallway and I’m pretty sure that they paused at our door before moving on. Tonight... well, something about the exchange I heard bothered me. Something is going to happen on this ship and I just want to take a little walk out on deck and see...”
“See if you can find whoever was in the hallway? Wes, there’s no way in hell you can walk this entire ship!”
“I’m just going to take a quick walk, see...”
“Wes—”
“I’m all right—there’s security at night. Just a quick stroll, I promise!”
He was gone, giving her no more chance to argue. But he didn’t lie; he was back quickly.
She was waiting for him, standing in the center of the parlor area, arms crossed over her chest and a serious frown on her face.
