I will not be outdone by a shit like him who probably doesn’t know the first thing about making a woman come. Has she already had sex with him? Too many questions rattle throughmy brain. Based on the heavy breathing from my brothers, they’re thinking the same thing.
Her smile falters and her pace slows. I’m not able to hide my irritation
“What’s wrong?” she asks, and I realize she doesn’t know why I’m angry.
“We need to speak to you privately.”
“Is everything okay?”
“It’s private. He…” Robert thrusts a finger toward the guy. “… needs to leave.”
“I’ll stay, if you want me to, Lily.”
What the fuck? Lily? He has a nickname for her? I’m about to come unglued.
“It’s okay. Wait for me in the lobby.” She pulls her keycard out of her back pocket.
“He doesn’t need to wait.” My words are blunt.
“It’s almost midnight. We were heading out to celebrate my birthday.” She points to her tiara.
“We’re aware of what day it is. Tell him to fuck off.”
“Karl can—”
I thrust a finger to her lips. “Shhh… Don’t say another word until you’ve heard us out.”
She opens the door and turns to Karl, who I’m increasingly worried is her boyfriend, and I hope she doesn’t try to kiss him goodbye.
I step between them and say, “I’m sure you’ll hear from her tomorrow one way or another.”
Chapter 3
Lillian
“What’s going on?” I step through the living area I share with another student and enter my private room. If the guys didn’t seem so serious, our close quarters would be primed for one of my fantasies. I shove the girlish thought away.
“Sit down.” Robert points to my desk chair.
I close the door then sit. I’ve never seen my guardians like this. Robert stays close by my side. Thomas paces at the foot of the bed. Charles sits on the bed.
Their intensity makes my heart beat even faster. My sex is knotted tighter than ever, and I hope they can hurry with whatever they have to tell me because I need to get my vibrator out and deal with my embarrassing reaction.
I’d hoped that going off to college and putting distance between us would help me break the attraction. They’re handsome. They’re wealthy. They’re successful. And they’re incredibly kind. They have everything going for them, except none of them have wives. Robert did, but she died with my parents and a couple of my friends’ parents. It was tragedy beyond measure.
But what started as puppy love, a hopeless teenage crush before they were my guardians, has only gotten worse. Establishing my independence and meeting new people hasn’t stopped me from thinking about them every single night.
I’ve tried to be interested in college boys but they don’t measure up.
Karl wants to date, but I can’t commit. He’s not who I crave.
I have to focus. “What’s so urgent? And why not call?”
“This couldn’t be handled over the phone,” Charles says. With none of them making eye contact, a flurry of hope teases my imagination.
“Okay…”
“We don’t consider our responsibility to you done just because you turned twenty-one.”
