“I know you, Adam. I can tell you’re obsessed with her.”

“Okay, maybe I do have feelings for her, but I am not obsessed with Kayla.”

“If you have feelings for her, what are you going to do about it?”

“Nothing.”

“Nothing?! Why in God’s name are you going to do nothing about it?”

“Because I’ve already brought it up to her once and she made it clear that she’s not interested.”

“Is that it?”

“What do you mean? Was I supposed to do something else? Perhaps take a page out of Lucas’ book and club her over the head?”

She sighs. “I guess you’ve never had to work to get a woman in your life. So you don’t know that you’re supposed to pursue her. Be persistent. Women want to see men make an effort.”

“I think what you’re describing amounts to sexual harassment.”

“Oh, come off it. You like her. You have a child with her. She would be crazy not to want my perfect son. So put in a little bit of an effort and see if that doesn’t bring her around.”

“You know what, Mom? I don’t wanna talk about this anymore.”

“But—”

“Really. I’m done with this.”

“Fine, but I want to see my grandson soon.”

“That’s something I can actually do for you. Let me know when you have a couple days free and I’ll send the jet for you.”

“I can’t wait.”

We say our goodbyes and get off the phone.

I spend the rest of my evening trying not to let Mom’s words sway me into making another move on Kayla. I don’t want to spook her because we have a pretty good thing going.

Alife in news is never calm.

Half the time I’m running around like a headless chicken trying to put out fires. However, today is more chaos-ridden than usual.

Around lunchtime I feel like I’ve packed three days’ worth of crazy into my morning.

I’m in my office trying to take a breather when my phone rings.

It’s Lucas.

“I don’t have a lot of time. What’s up?” I ask.
