I smirked. “No, but maybe my heart knew it.”
We were silent after that, enjoying the peace of knowing we had eternity together. For so long that had felt like a curse to me, never dying of old age, always moving forward and never changing, but still seeing the world around me move forward. It still felt like it moved without me, leaving the thing behind that did not fit in.
“I was wondering,” Felix began, his voice tentative. “Could you tell me more of your past? Of vampires in general? I only know what is common knowledge, and I never asked my previous masters anything.”
I hummed, trying to decide where to start. So, I chose the beginning. “Vampires, as you know, were not born, but created. We were forced upon this earth by a witch and a demon working together. They mistakenly created the first vampire, a woman that was rumored to have the name of Fransisca, or something close to that.”
“I read that it was a demon that escaped hell, biting a random human and that was how vampires were created.”
I shook my head, my eyes remaining closed. “That was a rumor spread by witches who feared people would turn against them, if they knew a witch was part of the reason for this new predator walking amongst them.”
He scoffed. “Witches really do seem less and less friendly. And here the Silver Lock Coven believed vampires to be the evil ones.”
I smiled at that. “Anyone alive has the ability to be evil. It does not matter the species.”
“Ain’t that the truth,” he agreed. “So, what happened after she was created?”
“She turned to bloodlust, attacking every living thing she could find. She was not like how new vampires are today. Her instincts were the strongest of all, as were her abilities. She had all of them.”
“All of them?!” he asked, alarmed.
I nodded, opening my eyes so he could see the honesty as I continued. “She is the one we are all descended from. I hold some of her abilities, as do other vampires. It is believed that the vampires she turned each got one ability and then they passed that on to those theyturned themselves. Some abilities are without a doubt lost to time, having died off with the vampires.”
“That’s so crazy to think about.”
“It is. But at the same time, it also makes sense. The creation of her made demons and witches afraid to be seen together, now that the world knew what those two species could create together. It changed a lot of things, from what I have heard.”
“Like the demons being forced to stay in their realm,” Felix guessed.
“Exactly. Now they aren’t allowed on earth unless they have a job to do. They actually cannot come here without permission from their leaders.”
“Is it wrong that I like that? That even if they shouldn’t be punished for one demon’s mistakes, I’m also glad it can’t happen again?”
“It is normal to think like that, I believe. I held a lot of fear back when I was human, then I experienced another kind of fear as a vampire. And I am not telling you this to scare you, but some day, the demons will walk earth freely again. History is doomed to repeat itself, and I am speaking from experience on that.”
He frowned as he looked at the water, slowly losing its bubbles. “I guess I’ll be ready for it when the time comes.”
“You will,” I agreed. “And remember, even if another creature would get created, we now have allies to help us out. The world is more connected now than it was back then. I trust we will overcome whatever happens.”
“I hope so.” He took my now empty glass and cuddled into me; our naked bodies slick with the oils from the soap. It would be a challenge getting up from here. “Tell me about your family.”
And so, I did. I told him about my sisters, and how our father had planned for them to marry when we had all turned. How—even with his old age—he still went hunting for the town, proving how powerful he was. I admitted how shy I was as a human, afraid of what my future would hold even before I was told to transition into a vampire. Then I told him how being gay worked back then, how before Christianity had moved to our country, having sex with men was okay, but if they wanted to marry, the weaker one would be treated as a woman. It was hard for men to accept losing their ranks or social standings, making it less appealing since it meant one of them would lose so much. Then Christianity came, and same sex was viewed badly, not horribly at first, but over time it was overdone, like they needed something to hate and since Satan was not walking around annoying them, they turned to same sex couples instead.
“That is why I have never let anyone top me before,” I admitted, still holding firm on those old beliefs from our time as Vikings. We really were not fully Vikings, since the times were slowly changing, but I had experienced both as I grew up, knowing how the world I grew up in wanted a man like me to behave.
“Because back then, you would have lost your social standing?” he questioned.
I nodded, his head still resting against my chest, the water cooling around us. “I would have lost my right to provide for my family, a thing I felt pride in doing. When religion truly took over my country, that was when my father found the vampire and paid for him to change us. He was old school and preferred to have the last word in arguments, but when everyone started fearing God, he made a desperate decision instead.”
“Fuck,” he muttered. “I’m so sorry, Sev. I had no idea how fucked up it’d been back then.” That was not even the worst part I had lived through, but I did not feel ready to go through my whole life’s trauma in one night.
“It made me who I am today. I would rather think back on the good memories, and move forward with you, knowing the world is different and what I always dreamed of is now a reality.”
He sat up, smiling smugly at me. “And you want your fated to fuck you. To claim you, as you deserve to be.”
I swallowed my nerves, letting my heart lead me. “Yes.”
