Faye looks up at me. “So, will you help me?”
“Yes.” I let out a slow release of breath, pushing my fear down and replacing it with something else, something strong, made of steel. “But how the hell are we going to find them?”
Faye smiles. “I have an idea about that.”
CHAPTER 63
THE SISTER
Hello, Sister.
Your daughter looks just like you, Faye. A little like me, too. No one can say my mother doesn’t have strong genes. What else did she pass down? That cruel streak? I know I have it, but what about you? And Claire?
Magnus hasn’t spoken to me for a very long time, hours now, but I have noticed him staring at Penny in the rearview mirror. It makes my entire body electric with rage, but I keep quiet. Swallowing it down and keeping it to myself, just like I learned as a child.
She is passed out in the backseat, tied up, against her will. She doesn’t want to be here, but I do. I’ve given up everything for Magnus, sacrificed my entire life, to come away with him. But he doesn’t seem to be grateful, and the way he looks at her makes me want to hurt her. Badly.
We drive north, miles and miles of remote countryside with no lights except for the headlights of our car carving through the darkness.
Now that we are on the news and the police are looking for us, Magnus thinks the bank transaction will fail, and our millions will have evaporated to dust. So, now we only have my money to live off. He needs me more than he needs Penny. Tomorrow I will persuade him that she has to go. I hope he lets me decide how.
So, you see, dear sister, soon I will get my ultimate revenge on you. Your darling Penny will be ripped away from you forever.
CHAPTER 64
FAYE
When Nathan leaves, it is just me and my twin sister in the Palmer House.
Alone at last.
We are sat in the living room, as if we are about to have a cosy night in, no drama, nothing eventful. Just two sisters catching up.
“So, how are we going to find them?” Claire asks, almost as soon as the front door shuts.
I take out my phone and put my glasses on, then I tap on the tracking app that Penny installed on my phone. “This might not work, but Penny wanted to keep tabs on me and made me install this location finder.”
I click into it and wait for it to load.
“I can track Penny using this. She set it all up for me.” I sigh. “God, I hope her phone is still charged.”
I select Penny’s name.
Then a map appears with a dot.
My heart jumps with delight.
There she is.
I want to reach out and touch her. I want to tell her everything will be okay.
“What does it tell you?” Claire asks eagerly.
“They’re in Scotland.” I look again and zoom out to see more of the area. “The Highlands. It’s about as far away as you can get without leaving the country. Which he can’t do because he’s wanted by the police. They probably put a block on his passport.”
“They could be heading up there to regroup,” she says.
I nod. “So, what do we need to do now?”
