The server comes back, and I order the club sandwich while Jackson gets the burger. Then we’re alone again. His green eyes are locked on me, and I squirm in my seat.
“What’s your place like in Wolf Valley?”
I shrug. “Nothing fancy. It’s a little apartment above the bakery. It always smells great.”
He laughs. “Do you go there for breakfast every morning?”
“Nah. I mean, sometimes, but I like to cook. Do you eat out a lot?”
“Kind of. You get sick of frozen TV dinners pretty quick,” he sighs.
“You don’t cook?”
“Not well,” he admits.
“You could take a class,” I suggest.
“You could teach me,” he counters.
“Sure, the next time you’re in Wolf Valley, hit me up.”
“I will,” he promises.
Our food is dropped off, and we both dig in. I ask him about his time in the military and the places he’s seen. We talkabout travel locations, and he asks me why I got into wedding planning.
“I’ve always loved weddings, and I’ve always been a big planner, so it was kind of perfect.”
“Sounds like it. Are you hiring?”
“You want to be a wedding planner?”
“I think it might be fun.”
God, I think I’m falling for him right here in this booth.
The server comes back and drops off the bill. Jackson grabs it before I can stop him and pulls out his wallet, setting some bills on the table.
“We can split it,” I offer.
He shakes his head. “Let me treat you.”
“Well, thank you.”
“It was my pleasure,” he says, standing and offering me his hand.
I slip mine into his, and he pulls me to my feet. He holds it as we walk back to his car. He doesn’t let it go as we drive back to the hotel either.
I smile, my cheeks heating as I think about what’s going to happen tonight.

Fern dropsmy hand when we get back to the hotel.
“I need to check in with Valerie,” she says, sounding like she’s going to her death.
“Yeah, I should check in with the other security guys,” I say as we make our way up the path to the front doors.
