“I know, but we will never know what he wants if we don’t play the game.”
It should worry me that she was picking up how to manipulate people so quickly.
“Well I am here now, we made an agreement that I will never be chained again.”
“Until she no longer needs you,” my father said, trying to worm his way into her mind with seeds of doubt.
“What is your point?”
“I can free you from the confines of her mind. Once expelled of your humanity, you can return to Heaven with me.”
Both myself and Indigo jerked away from him with shock. What game was he playing? “Why would I do that?”
“Aren’t you tired of being called upon only when she needs you to protect her?”
“Cora is me, and I am her.”
“You don’t have to be.”
Indigo shook her head but I could sense her hesitancy. Did she really resent me? I couldn’t help that she was a creature within me.
“What would happen to Cora?”
My father leaned back on the sofa and smiled. “She would be no more.”
“She would also go to Heaven?”
“No, she would not exist.”
Wow, this asshole of a sperm donor was actually trying to wipe out my existence. I should feel honored he cared at all.
“Why not just kill us as we are?” Indigo asked.
“I long for a daughter in my own image. That would be you, Indigo.”
Lies, lies, lies. Something was wrong with this whole situation.
“How would you separate us?”
His lips kicked up further. “There’s a spell in the book Cora willingly traded for a few pitiful lives. She is a disappointment. You would have never taken such action.”
So he did know about the book. His assertion about Indigo’s thoughts wasn’t incorrect. Indigo had said as much, but I hoped I was beginning to show her that family mattered. Well, most of it. What surprised me the most was my father’s apparent willingness to deal with a book of evil. Wouldn’t he burst into flames or something apocalyptic if he tried using it?
“The spell is in the Red Dragon?” she checked.
“It is. Also, Eloise cannot be allowed to carry out her plan.” Why did that sound like a side note? Surely, he was here because a crazy woman was wielding a powerful book with undisclosed intentions? I was meant to be the side note.
“He wants you dead,” Indigo said.
“Apparently, I’m a disappointment all around.”
“I could try to kill him?”
I took a beat, because for a split second I contemplated ridding the earth of another supernatural force with a hidden agenda. My father’s gaze flashed with blue fire.
“Um, no, probably not a good idea.”
“Ending those that threaten us is essential for survival.”
