“Yes,” Babu said. “I thought we cleared this up already?”
“We already went down. Are you telling me there’s a basement in the basement?” Sebastian grumbled.
Babu blinked and handed Hudson the blade. Hudson wiped it on his shirt and then held out a hand for mine. Aww, he was letting me go first.
I ran the blade over my palm and let my blood fall to the floor and Hudson followed. Sebastian, being all about the drama, bit his wrist and let his blood mix with the rest. Hudson rolled his eyes and handed Babu the blade back.
Babu began to utter some words in a foreign language and the floor shifted beneath us.
“Do you think—” My words were cut off as the floor fell away and we dropped down into a hole. I landed with a jolt while Hudson huffed and Sebastian grumbled. Babu looked down at us from the edge of the hole.
“The book you seek is in the cavern to your left,” he said.
“If there are snakes, I’ll murder him,” Hudson growled as he leapt to his feet and offered me his hand.
“Why would you say that?” I asked.
“He’s been watching too muchIndiana Jones,” Sebastian quipped.
“Hurry,” Babu said. “I don’t want to be caught here once they get back from lunch.”
I pulled out my phone from my bag and switched on the flashlight. Not all of us had supernatural eyesight.
We were in a cave where four tunnels converged. I pointed at the tunnel to our left and we started trudging down it, Hudson in the lead, me in the middle, and Sebastian at the rear who was muttering about giant spiders and snakes.
The tunnel opened into a small room and in the center sat a large book on a tall stone pedestal. We surrounded it, but none of us made a move to remove the book.
“Is this feeling a little too easy for anybody else?” Sebastian asked.
I spun in a circle, taking in the room. There was nothing to suggest the room was booby trapped, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t. I nibbled my bottom lip and sucked in a breath.
“No amount of standing here is going to reveal what, if anything, awaits us. So be on your guard and if something other than us moves, kill it.”
Indigo stirred in my chest and surveyed the room.“Something is here,”she told me.
Hudson reached out for the book, I slapped his hand away. “Um, Indigo can sense something.”
“Who?” Sebastian asked.
Hudson smirked, clearly he felt smug that he knew something Sebastian did not.
“My creature.”
“Your what?”
“Creature. It’s a long story, let’s take her word for it.”
Sebastian blinked as Indigo’s power rippled along my spine.“Let me show the vampire our power.”
“Now is not the time to be showing off,” I chastised her.
“She’s inside of you, speaking?” Sebastian checked. Shit, I must have spoken aloud.
“Can we discuss this later?”
“Fine. You have hours on the flight home to share whatever you’ve been hiding.”
Damn it, I could hardly run from him on a flight. Maybe I could get an upgrade and leave the men to figure out their differences.
