“Have you considered this could be a trap?” Hudson asked.

“By whom and why?”

“There are very few people who know what you can do.”

A shiver worked its way down my spine as I considered what he was saying. Four people knew, and two of those people were sitting in this car, and one was on the phone. Rebecca was the other. I trusted each and every one of them. Wait. No, there were more, except they didn’t reside on Earth. My father and his cadre of angels knew, but also my uncle and his horde of demons in Hell. That was concerning.

“That’s true, but I can’t ignore the fact a ghost turned up and declared that everyone was dead.”

“Everyone,” Caleb agreed.

“Everyone as in his family?” Hudson asked. “Surely that is a case for the local law enforcement?”

“Everyone is dead,” Caleb reminded me.

Harry frowned at Caleb and then shrugged his shoulders as his stare turned toward me.

“Yeah, theeveryoneis yet to be defined. Someone sent him my way for a reason. If it’s a trap, I have a Dave and a Vampire Prince with me. Plus, I’m hardly defenseless.”

A heavy pause came from the speaker. I glanced at the screen—nope, we were still connected. “Sebastian is there?” Hudson growled.

Ugh. Dave’s smile widened like he was enjoying my pain. “He’s my best friend.”

“So you called him before me?”

I squeezed my eyes closed and rubbed my throbbing left temple. I was starting to get a headache. “No, I didn’t call him at all. He was already there.”

“I was reminding Cora of our prior engagement,” Sebastian said. His tone was neutral but it was still delivered with the tact of an atomic bomb. Thank you, Sebastian.

“I see,” Hudson said in an equally neutral yet scary tone. If they were in the same space, Hudson’s hackles would be up and Sebastian would be baring his pointy teeth. This is my life. Supernatural passive aggression at its finest.

“There’s nothing you need to worry about, Principal,” Sebastian said. “And your attack dog is here. Unless you don’t trust your mate?”

Wow, way to twist the narrative. I was outmatched by these political superpowers. I wanted to help the dead, eat cookies, and snuggle with my mate. I was a simple woman.

“I trust my mate, it is you I don’t trust. Try not to trip and give her your blood.”

The pounding in my temples trebled in intensity. “Stop, both of you. Just stop. I will call you with an update once we arrive at Peach Tree and understand better what is happening.”

“Do that. Are you driving straight through or stopping to rest?”

I glanced at Dave who gave a stiff nod. Right, the man of many words. “Straight through, we can take shifts if need be.”

“Cora?” Hudson adds before I can press the red end call button on the screen.

“Yes?”

“If you need to protect yourself, you let her out.”

“Will do.” My voice raised an octave, making me clench my teeth.

“Just so we are clear, if the bloodsucker feeds you his blood, I will kill him, consequences be damned.”

“Glad we cleared that up,” Sebastian grumbled as the call was cut off.

“You could have helped,” I pointed out to Dave.

He grinned like he’d enjoyed my squirming far too much. Lord help me, I was surrounded by difficult males who delighted in winding each other up.
