Chapter Three
Back in Boston....
Leon remained wide awake long after his household went to bed.Sitting in his office staring through the window at the darkness outside. He had a glass of bourbon next to him as he sat behind his big oak desk. His mind was intentionally blank at the moment. He sat there knowing sleep wouldn’t come as worry tightened his insides.
No one could tell him where Calderone had disappeared to.Last he heard they did not know.No one had heard anything about his whereabouts and that worried Leon. Was his son alive or dead?
Just then, a small knock sounded on his door and Leon’s gaze snapped over to stare at it.He growled under his breath and wished he could just ignore it.Then he thought it could be word about his son, so he surged to his feet.Marching over, he flung the door open.“Che diavolo?”
Bane and Storm stood on the other side.
Bane raised a brow and replied in Italian, “Ci scusiamo per il disturbo.”We are sorry to disturb you.
Leon grunted as his mood was rather foul at the moment. He simply stepped back.
Both men entered the den and they looked around at the tidy office. The only thing out of place was the glass of dark amber liquid on the desk.
Bane raised his eyebrow and turned to Leon.“You know it’s almost a sin to drink alone, right?”His voice sounded even and calm.
Leon closed his eyes and sighed.“Si, which is why I’m glad you joined me.”Opening his dark eyes, he stared at Bane. Then shutting the door Leon went over to the bar area to pour two more glasses. He handed them out and then went to sit behind his desk again.
Bane and Storm sat on the other side in the overstuff leather chairs.
No one spoke for a long time.
Storm leaned back in his chair and studied Leon then he sipped his drink. His eyes closed and he groaned at the flavor in his mouth.“Damn man, this is the good stuff ain’t it?Should have known you only have the best here.”
Leon nodded and raised the bottle up.As he still didn’t speak.
The label read...Sons Of Ireland Whiskey.
Storm nodded.“Heck yeah. The best in the world.”
Bane watched Leon carefully. Finally, he leaned forward and spoke softly, “You know if there is any way he can get on a plane, he will.”He could see the worry in Leon’s eyes.
Leon froze then he relaxed and nodded shortly.“I hope he will.”Leon sighed.“But as far as I have heard, no one knows where he is or if he’s still alive.”
Storm shook his head.“Mr.Leon, don’t you worry about that man. He’s got more of you inside him than you realize.I’ve been watching him for a long time now and he’s gonna fight to get back here. You wait and see. He’ll be at the front door sooner than you think.”
Leon turned his head and stared at him.“I can only pray that he’s doing just that, but the Don has told me that Fredo has not been captured yet.He needs to take out the rightful positions in order to step into power and he hasn’t done that yet.”
Storm snorted and shook his head.“He knows his plan will never take root, at least not here. And I’m sure the Don has his own security. This Fredo character is counting on his son Giovano to have made solid plans to kill you and step into your place here, but he underestimated you.He thinks you can’t keep the wolves away from your own front door. He’s planning on Giovano walking inside your gates with little or no confrontation and just pushing your body away from this desk. Then step over you and take away everything you earned by your own sweat, blood and tears. That man is delusional. His plan was bullshit from the moment he thought it up.And I’m guessing him and all his men are figuring that out while they’re hiding in basements and shadows about now. They know they can’t be caught to then face a firing squad.”
Leon stared at Storm. He found it interesting to hear this from a man who fought hard for his own friends and fellow soldiers.Leon wouldn’t dismiss his opinion in this.
Storm leaned back and grinned.“And if your Don is anything like you, he’ll be caught before he even knows there’s anyone knocking at his front door. You need to have a little faith here, brother.Have faith that Calderone knows what the hell he’s doing and faith that the man in the highest office of your Familia knows what the hell he’s doing.”
Leon stared at him for a full minute or so then he finally spoke, “I guess I’ll have to learn to trust what I taught him to do if something like this ever happened.I taught him what to do if it ever did but I never knew if the boy was listening.”He sighed and nodded.“Thank you for reminding me and I am praying that he remembers.”
Storm drained his glass and got to his feet.“Your friends from the MC are on perimeter guarding. We are guarding the inside and outside the windows.I appreciate the chance here.My boys and I will not let you down.”Then he nodded at the empty glass.“And thanks for the fine drink.”
“Si, but I cannot take credit for that.Seamus O’Malley sent me a few cases of it.”
“Of course, he did.”Storm smirked.“That’s another well respected man.I’ve met him a few times. He and his sons bring donations of food and clothing to the downtown shelters.”He gave Leon a nod.“Good night and try to get some sleep. We’ve got guard duty in a bit.So you all will be safe.”Then he turned and walked to the door. When he left, the doorsnickedshut behind him.
